though, her hair is forever in a tangle, her dress is always torn and she doesn't care at all for being called 'good'. But then a terrible accident happens and Katy must find the courage to remember her daydreams and the delightful plans she once schemed.
Katy Carr is untidy, tall and gangling, planning for the day when she will be "beautiful ... more
and beloved, and amiable as an angel". An accidental fall from a swing seems to threaten her hopes for the future, but Katy struggles to overcome her difficulties with pluck, vitality and good humour.
Advantages: Seems to portray a close family who cope no matter what Disadvantages: I found the problems Katy encounters with ill health much more believeable than Cousin Helen.

I read the first three Katy books in my younger days & only recently in the last year got my hands on the last Two that were written to take the stories into adulthood.
The first Three, What Katy Did, What Katy Did At School & What Katy Did Next were very definatly set to try to encompass any One of several age groups from Katy's very obvious little brother & sisters to her sister Clover who I am afraid seemed a bit to good for my taste & seemed very much Katy's shadow..
In What katy did we read of Katy, who is the oldest daughter having to learn some deep lessons about life & it's ups & downs.
What Katy did at school is hers & her sister Clover's chance to learn to live with others & to make life long friendships.
In What Katy did next, Katy gets what for those times is every girls desire, a chance to go abroad to Europe & other countries & see the world.
When I was much younger I found this Third book in the series the most compelling as it attempted to paint pictures of places that I imagned I would never get to see.
Now to hopefully encourage some more lovers of the katy books I highly reccomend both Clover & In The High Valley as both books I may add were definatly unput downables.
In Clover you here of Katy marrying which was how the previous Katy book ended with her engagement & how Clover then becomes a much more rounded character & takes real responsibility for others & becomes a real person now Katy is away from home..
This book concludes with Clover gaining her own share of happiness but with the ups & downs of life along the way.
The final book, In The High Valley is a loverly ending book where all the family end up getting their equal shares of happiness & yet people are also included like Rose & Cousin Helen.
There are of course the usual up's & downs of life & the highlights of family visits & mail arriving so they get to read of family news.
One has to remember particularly more so in the final Two books that the main country these books refer to is the USA & how vast it was then so mail was long in arriving & journeys were enoremous in length on long trains or boats & often news was well out of date when it did arrive.
In the last Two Katy books I picked up the real vastness of the American countryside & how lonely it must have been if you were alone for months on end in some of the remote areas.
It bought back for me memories of reading the Little House In The Pararie books & also the Little Woman books where being alone in remote areas & making Ones own forms of entertainment were ways of life.
Advantages: Great story which was well-written Disadvantages: Maybe a touch old fashioned for some of today's children.
...kept her copy from childhood.
What Katy Did is the story of Katy Carr and her younger brother and sisters who are being raised by their Father, a local doctor, and their Aunt as their Mother died on a missionary trip some years before. The story is mainly concerned with Katy who often has good intentions but rarely follows them through - something I could well relate to at that age!
The story really takes off when Katy, in direct disobedience to ... ...lot more thoughtful due to what happened to her on the swing. ( I won't say what that was, you'll have to get hold of a copy and find out for yourself...)
This is the first of three books the other two being What Katy did at school and What Katy did next, both as well-written and enjoyable as the first.
I have always enjoyed this book, having re-read it more times that I care to remember, especially as I could identify with Katy so easily being ...

Advantages: Makes you want to be a better person Disadvantages: It ends too soon
...the end, due mainly to What Katy Did on the swing at the beginning, she becomes a more likeable bossy older sister.
All of Katy's brothers and sisters characters are well defined. Cecy, the next door neighbour, pops in from time to time too.
I liked the character of Elsie, the little sister, so much that I have named my youngest daughter Elsie.
The children get up to all kinds of things both naughty and good, and make you want to gather up your ...
