ProEasy to read, often funny, fantastic tragic ending

ConsNot for those embroiled in an extra-marital affair

On the day of Princess Diana's death, failed rock star Vic Mullan spies his best friend's wife's distress as the perfect opportunity for him to comfort her and thus begin an affair. It is against the backdrop of mass grief and incomprehension over Diana that the affair is played out, and it turns...

In recent years we have seen a flood of novels written by people better known as comedians and comic actors. While many of them write material for others as well as themselves it has become the "in thing" to turn novelist. Most successful is probably Ben Elton (but I find his books rather...

ProSee opinion.

ConsSee opinion.

Vic and Joe have been friends since their University days. Vic is a session guitarist, he was in a fairly successful band once but these days he’s happy to dissipate his talent just as he is happy to dissipate just about everything else in his life. Vic is a creature of impulse; he talks on...

“Do You Know What Love Means”

published 12/02/2001

ProAddictive, emotional, humouress

ConsMay leave you with some unanswered questions

I remember seeing ‘Whatever Love Means’ reviewed briefly a long while ago in a magazine but never really thought much about it, and to be honest it was by David Baddiel, who I did not associate with a novelist for some reason. Also the fact that it was written around or at least was...

ProSublime story, depth of wit unmatched

Cons???

David Baddiel: comedian, scriptwriter, and - if you've read Time For Bed you'll have already realised - clever and witty author. So, you'd expect Whatever Love Means to be a hilarious read about some lighthearted topic; and you're totally wrong. Instead, Baddiel has written a fabulously told...

Pro'Bad Moon Rising'

ConsLondon being grey

This is a true contemporary novel, which combines modern men with pure comic wit. Baddiel has proved previously with 'Time For Bed' that he is more than capable of writing skillfully, now however, is when he starts to have fun. Based on a startling piece of recent history, he creates a...

ProA terribly compelling read

ConsOne that may make you cry in public

Set against the backdrop of one of the most hysterical moments of the last century, Whatever Love Means opens on the day everyone who lived through it will never forget - the day Princess Diana died. The resulting upheaval of the following days plays the perfect framework for the developing story...

Proan excellent clever yet individual book

Consyou need a few tissues along the way!

This book is perhaps the most cleverly written modern fiction book I have read to date - and believe me, thats a few! David Baddiel successfully captures raw emotion in his witty style. This is not the Baddiel we are used to seeing larking about with Frank Skinner - but a highly talented writer...

I have never left a review for anything online before. I'm 33, intelligent and not prone to gushing about anything. That said, this is my favourite book of all time. Have I read enough? No, but I'm far from illiterate. It really is that good.

Consnone that come to mind

This is a truly great read, a great story told with mastery and wit. The characters are very real and the clever backdrop of diana's tragic death only add to the realism of the situations that unfold. The book twists turns and twists again, comedy is mixed skillfully with tragedy and back again...
