When the Eagle Hunts - Simon Scarrow

Scarrow reaches high wit the eagles!

Advantages: Good battles that are fast and furious, character depth beyond anything ive read before.
Disadvantages: onto the 8th book now, might be getting slightly same-y

I have read all 8 of Simon Scarrows Roman Legion books and i would say this is definetly in the top 3! We have come to love Cato and Macro on their struggle through Gaul, Britain and Syria. For me the first two books were the best, its where we got to learn about Cato and Macro and their backgrounds, but now we see that Cato is no longer the scared boy he used to be, in many ways he is older than his veteran friend Macro. Macro simply see's a battle as a brawl, but relies on Cato to be the brains of the operation. In this book we see the pair in a struggle agaisnt the Parthians, defending the city Palmyras, a key stronghold in a political struggle, and already in revolt. A serious challenger to Bernard Cornwall

Advantages: Superb historical fiction set in a tubulent time
Disadvantages: None

I have struggled in recent years to find any new authors who can write a decent series of books in which characters develop, it was a struggle I should say until I brought Simon Scarrow?s Centurion in 2008. Suddenly I had found an author who could write on a historical subject and really make it seem that he knew what he was writing about, and as a result I sought out the other seven books in the Eagle series. The first of these is ?Under the Eagle?. Before I say more about this particular book, I will give some background information, as it may put some people off or it may intrigue people. Hunting for the plot of Hunted

Advantages: good ending
Disadvantages: Only read it if you've read the others

Untamed, but it's true again in Hunted. The content is also a little creepy, and there is an element of gore, together with some quite teenage themes (relationships, friendships) and language. Because of all of this I think that the warning on the back 'not suitable for younger readers' is very accurate. After reading the first three books, I really wanted to know what was coming next, and I also had that slightly satisfied feeling you can get after reading a really enjoyable book. I didn't get either of these feelings following Untamed, which I was disappointed by. Having read Hunted, I do want to know what's coming, and I will definitely buy Tempted when it's out in paperback, but I don't have that same must know feeling. ...
