As it is coming up to Easter, I've been rummaging through my bookcase to find relevant books for the different age groups I teach.
I have the Nursery children for a short spell once a week and happened upon this lovely book by Harriet Ziefert.

The Easter Egg Hunt.
Advantages: A lovely lift-the-flap book Disadvantages: None

~ Harriet Ziefert ~
This author has written literally hundreds of children's books, mostly picture and easy to read ones.
She was born in New Jersey and ... ...by her that she has a background in education, once being a elementary (primary) school teacher.
~ The Story ~
It's a very simple story with Nicky's (a kitten) Mum sending her off an Easter egg hunt.
The kitten looks everywhere:
* in the tree
* in the long reeds of grass
* behind the rock etc
Until she finally finds it in the Easter basket with her name on it.

This author has written literally hundreds of children's books, mostly picture and easy to read ones.
She was born in New Jersey and it is obvious from the books that I have read by her that she has a background in education, once being a elementary (primary) school teacher.

This is ideal for pre-school / nursery age children.
It has a very simple story, with a flap lifting opportunity on every page, which young children really enjoy.As Nicky the kitten looks behind all of the flaps there is a different animal under each one telling her that the egg they have is theirs, e.g.
the hen says " It's not your egg, it's mine!"
the tortoise says "Go away from my egg."
~ Edcuational Value ~I tend to rave on about more well-known author's books and their educational values, but this book is high on the list for helping children to learn in a fun way!
It develops fine motor skills and hand-eye co-ordination with the lift the flap opportunities.
It encourages children to interact with the book.
I particularly like the way that it develops understanding of position and the related vocabulary: behind, in, under, on etc
It introduces children to a variety of animals, e.g. snake, frog, duck, hen etc
The limited text is great for emergent readers and also so easy that very young children will be able to re-tell the story after the first or second reading.
~ Illustrations ~
Harriet Ziefert works with a wide range of illustrators on her books and for this particular one she chose Richard Brown.
All of the illustrations are set against a white background. They are very bold and bright and appeal to young children. All of the animals are very life-like!
~ Price ~
I have only ever seen this in paperback by Puffin, ISBN: 0-14-050537-7
Mine was £4.50 but amazon are selling used and new ones from 97p. Just watch out for their synopsis of the story as it just doesn't relate to the actual book at all!!
If you fancy a change from the more obvious children's authors like Carle, Ahlberg and Hill then you need look no further if you have very young children and want something relevant to the up and coming seasonal festivity!
