Now this is an offer you'd have to be crazy to refuse, so off I rushed to the Which? Online website in case suddenly was to vanish into thin air, or the internet sporadically crashed because of the crowds of other emailees were like-minded resulting in a chaos not dissimilar to the Census 1901 ... ...a copy of the paper Which? magazine that accompanies the seven-year-outdated copies of Hello and Womans Own in every dentists waiting room. I was vaguely familiar with the type of publication it is - to advise people on which car to buy, which mortgage provider to go with, which holiday is the best in terms of price/facilities/dog-sitting and so on, but I always likened Which? to Readers Digest or Saga, which was something over-50s subscribed to; ...

Advantages: Excellent content, good sense of community, good payback. Disadvantages: None really.
With Which On Line, you get that real confidence that continuity of service is guaranteed. That's very valuable when we see how big providers like Lineone with huge parents like BT behave in building customer confidence then terminating contracts.
The Consumers' Association is of course risk adverse, cannot be funded by advertising, and has to have the interest of consumers at heart, so it's unlikely to do anything that is unsustainable.
Which ... ...the electronic infrastructure, and technically things are just about as good as they could be.
For my part, I use cheaper dial-up access from other providers, but I still use Which for e-mail and webspace.
The real value of Which comes from its content, and this alone is worth the subscription price. All Which magazines are on line with huge archive information, but the forums are absolutely superb. It has a "mature" customer base, so there is ...

Advantages: Can always connect, access to excellent consumer reports Disadvantages: It costs monthly and call charges
...times. I signed up with Which? before the ISP market got saturated (maybe even before it really took off) and am still with them as my back-up ISP.
The advanage I see with WOL is that they *actually provide a service* rather than being just a glorified portal. Their service is access to the wealth of knowledge and research conducted by the Consumers Association.
I personally don't like subscribing to hard copy magazines anymore - I don't get time ... ...well there's access to Health Which?, Gardening Which? Money news etc. etc.
If like me then you've covered your Internet expenses by being with an unmetered ISP or scheme, £8/month is not much to pay for access to a very reliable back-up ISP WITH access to excellent consumer reports. ...

Advantages: Content. Access. Disadvantages: Cost of calls.
If you are a member of the Consumers Association, it doesn't cost much to subscribe to Which Online. Approximately five pounds per month. I've no idea how much it is for a non-member.
Connection has always been first time and have never experienced the sort of slowing down that I have from some 'free' providers.
Content is very good indeed with access to the C.A.'s huge library of product tests.
Another bonus is you receive further discounts from ... ...(unless you buy a lot), but is better than some store loyalty cards.
There are moderated dicussion forums that have the normal smattering of useful stuff amongst the dross.
My only real criticism is a perceived reluctance to move toward cheaper net access. You pay standard local call rates. This did irritate me until I started to try the alternatives. Some 'free' ISP's are not all they are cracked up to be, (surprise, surprise).
After all, being ...

Advantages: Consumer Watchdog, loads of information at your finger tips Disadvantages: "Free" trial not free, they don't return money taken by mistake
...heard good things about the Which? online 30 day free trial, I thought I'd give it a go. Unfortunately, it is not platform independent (i.e. it is designed for Windows users) and I use Risc OS so I was unable to access all the features. The actual service seems okay but I would advise people not to sign up for the trial unless they expect to remain subscribed.
I cancelled my subscription following the terms of the "free" trial as I couldn't access ... ...to look at it through a slow dial up connection. That is where the problems started. My next bank statement had two monthly payments taken (the first payment had been late as it had fallen at the weekend). I phoned them up and they said they would cancel the account and that I could have the money back if I forwarded my original cancellation e-mail. This I did but they did not refund the money.
I wrote to them and they said I had not cancelled in ...

Advantages: free internet charges, cheaper phone calls Disadvantages: one off charge of 10 pounds
...With NTL you only have to pay a small one off charge of about 10 pounds which is cheaper than other competing ISP's which are usually about 20 pounds. That price paid, is for an adapter, which plugs into your existing BT landline. Then you have free internet calls forever, and also you get cheaper phone calls than if you were paying BT. This is an amazing offer which I have taken, and I recomend it to anyone considering choosing an ISP of this type, seeing as you will get that 10 pounds back by cheaper call charges....
