When we were first adopted by our lovely cat, Mew, we fed him on Asda Tiger cat food. Money was a bit tight at the time to say the least as hubby was between contracts and our savings were almost spent. I told Mew in no uncertain terms when he moved in that he would be eating the cheapest cat food and that he shouldn’t get any ideas about trying the posh stuff! LOL!

After a while he started to leave his moist Tiger pouches and we were throwing most of each meal away. He did like the Tiger dry food but I wondered whether this was enough for him so I read a few reviews on various sites.

I found that lot of people – and their cats – liked Whiskas Complete so I thought I would try it if it wasn’t too expensive.

The current prices at Asda are as follows:
375g box – £1.21
950g box - £2.00
2kg bag - £4.31
4kg bag - £8.97
So two bags weighing 2kgs each would be slightly cheaper than one bag weighing 4kg!

The last time I ordered some Whiskas Complete I bought it from Pet Supermarket. Although it cost £20.64 for 7.5kg bag I did then get 5% cashback by going through Quidco making it almost as cheap as Asda and Pet Supermarket offer free delivery on orders over £79. Since I know that Mew loves this food I decided to order plenty and stock up so that I did not have to pay any extra for postage.

The flavours available are chicken and vegetable, duck and turkey, lamb and vegetable and tuna and vegetable. There is also one especially for kittens and another for senior cats.

The bag itself is the rich purple colour we now associate with Whiskas and their products. It shows a cat looking at the product being poured into a feeding bowl with the words ‘packed full of taste’.

At the top of the bag there is a sort of diagram of a zip about six inches long and all you have to do is peel this piece off the bag to reveal a long thin hole through which you can then pour the contents into the cat’s bowl.

My first impression of this cat food was very positive. With the Tiger dry that Mew had been eating there was little variation within the product but with the Whiskas I could see the little brown crunchy nuggets which I took to be the meat element of the food and I could also see all the vegetables as well.

The smell was pleasant too – I find the smell of most of the moist cat food really nauseating I’m afraid! This smells like dried meat and vegetables, which is pretty much what it is after all.

Apparently the crunchy bits are called kibbles and I didn’t have a clue what kibbles were so I Googled it and found that they are pellets of coarsely ground grain so now we know.

Reading the details on the packet the crunchy nuggets apparently have a soft, meaty centre – and no I don’t intend trying one for the purposes of this review! They also contain natural oils, vitamins A, E and D3 and minerals such as Taurine which apparently promotes healthy eyesight. The complete nutrition of this food is also good for developing a shiny coat and healthy teeth.

OK so this is all very well but if Mew doesn’t like the taste all the nutritional information will be useless!

I needn’t have worried there – he went mad for it! I put some in his bowl – I don’t give him large meals as he is better eating a smaller meal more often rather than eating a lot at a time – and watched his reaction.

He was there as soon as I was pouring it into the bowl and he scoffed the lot and licked his lips! He loved it.

He has now been eating it for over a year now and he still really enjoys it. He seems to like the crunchy texture and is obviously deriving enough nutrition from it although he does have the occasional small tin of wet food, usually Sheba, as a treat and he does supplement his own diet as well.

We live on the Great Orme in Llandudno which is a Country Park and so is a lovely place for a cat to live. He is a good hunter and often eats lizards, mice and even a pigeon or two! We often come home to find a bowel on the floor in the room where his things are. Apparently this is the only bit of most animals that a cat won’t eat but of course we can’t tell from the bowel alone what it is that he has caught and eaten!

Anyway back to the Whiskas!

I find that a 7.5kg bag lasts about 3 months so the cost works out about the same as the cheaper cat food that Mew was originally eating when he first came to live with us.

One thing that you must remember when feeding your cat any dry food you must remember that there has to be a constant supply of clean drinking water available, although Mew tends to go outside and drink from the garden pond instead!

Each time we finish a bag of Whiskas Complete we get the next bag in a different flavour just to ring the changes a bit for Mew – mind you his extra snacks would probably combat the boredom bless him!

The other big advantage of this food is that if we stay with friends for a night I can leave some of this in his new clockwork pet feeder (review written) and it will remain fresh for Mew.
