The Famous Grouse is out...Must Be Christmas

Advantages: A lot smoother than most
Disadvantages: None really

...whisky drinker i only drink the stuff neat, and to be honest that is the only way to have it. If your one for mixing it in Lemonade and the likes, i dont thing it matters too much which brand of whisky one uses. Grouse was one of the first whiskys i tried as a kid as it always seemed to be around at christmas time, and still reminds me of crimbo to this day. Grouse is a little smoother than most whiskys and not too harsh on the throat. Great taste ...

Catch the Jameson Spirit!

Advantages: Smooth, aromatic, and comforting
Disadvantages: Expensive

...an overall mood of relaxation. Jameson falls well within these criteria. I have a favorite sister-in-law (now even more esteemed) to thank for my introduction to Jameson. Having traveled to Ireland where she visited the Jameson Distillery and museum, Herself was chosen to participate in a “taste-off” in which she compared several whiskeys. Jameson, she insisted, was by far the best of the lot. She recognized, of course, that it would ...
...and warm glow associated with Jameson left their mark and turned her into a long-standing advocate—and she has gained me as a convert. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ What It Is ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The Jameson I keep on hand is the 12-Year-Old Distillery Reserve (until recently known as Jameson 1780 Reserve). As the label proudly states, the whiskeys used for this blend are “matured for not less than 12 years.” (Note that the 12 years refers to the ...

A unique Midland malt

Advantages: Unique, interesting to the palate
Disadvantages: A bit unpredictable at times -- is that a con?

Dalwhinnie is a very good single malt scotch from the Central Highlands region of Scotland. Perhaps not worthy to be ranked among the top-tier of scotches, Dalwhinnie nonetheless ranks as one of my favourites from the Midlands. (Just a refresher -- single-malt means that the whisky comes from one distillery and is made from malted barely, as opposed to blended or grain whisky. Also, for Scotch, is it spelled whisky, while most others insert the ...
...spirits give this elemental experience. Dalwhinnie is one such single-malt that does speak its origin in its name, in the middle of Scotland, sturdy and not timid, not to be budged. There is a bit of heather and flower in the nose and in the taste. The colour is a pale gold, shimmering and interesting, a little on the unassuming side. But the taste roars back, with hints of vanilla, fruitiness, a bit of flowering and just a gentle toasting (not ...

Blended or Not Blended

Advantages: Good Brand Name
Disadvantages: Blended Whisky

Black Label was my favourite until I tried single malt whiskies some 20 years ago. Since then, blended whiskies have been taken out from my list. Blended whiskies use more than one grain for malting, such as wheat, rye, maize, and barley, while single malt whiskies use only barley. Blended whiskies require 3 years to mature. However, a single malt whisky takes at least 10 years to reach it maximum condition for drinking. Don't mixed up the term ...
...before bottling, that is, several barrels of the same single malt of the same year are "married" together to obtain consistency. Almost all signature blended whiskies are "vatted" with certain percentage of single malt whiskies. The famous Vat 69 is a classic example of a successful vatted blended whisky. About 30 years ago when I was young, I compared the Red Label with this Vat 69. The Vat 69 was far better than the Red Label, Once I tried the ...

Jack Daniels got this drink spot on

Advantages: Refreshing, if served in the right way
Disadvantages: Bit of an old man's drink!

I first tried Jack Daniels a couple of years ago, and it is still my drink of choice today. Jack Daniels is a bourbon whiskey hailing from Tennesee, that is delicious on its own or, my preference, with a mixer. Generally a cold coke, a shot of Jack Daniels and a lemon on the side goes down a treat. There are plenty of mixers that go however, lemonade, red bull (an acquired taste), Jack Daniels is a bit expensive, depending on which way you look at ...
...worth it. The company Jack Daniels itself is brilliant. I joined the mailing list a couple of years ago, and since then every few months or so they'll send free goodies through the post along with a basic questionnaire. I've had recently a poker chip, a cool bottle opener, luggage tag, all sporting the Jack Daniels logo, and I think they're fantastic collection pieces. I've also been sent a JD calendar too which resides on my desk at work so I can ...
