Advantages: Another great book in the series, which teaches children to look after their belongings. Disadvantages: None
Where AreYou, Blue Kangaroo? By Emma Chichester Clark
I have already reviewed some of this series, but this is another favourite about Lily and her Blue Kangaroo.
***What's it all about?***
The story opens with what appears to be Lily and Blue Kangaroo playing hide and seek. However, it becomes clear that Blue Kangaroo isn't hiding on purpose; Lily keeps losing him! Lily's friend Florence takes her to the park, she has a lovely time and is about to leave; when she realises she has forgot something! Blue Kangaroo! She finds him on the slide and Florence tells her to be more careful next time.
The next week-end Lily goes shopping with Aunt Jemima and travels by bus. She is in a busy crowd of people when she remembers something - she has left Blue Kangaroo on the bus. Luckily a lady has seen what has happened and chases after them ...
Advantages: Great story to illustrate what it feels like to be left out. Disadvantages: None
she fought over him with the baby (I think Blue Kangaroo is a him!). Lily's mother asks Lily if baby can have one of her animals - after all, she has so many!
Lily rushes back to her room, scoops up all the soft toys, gives them all to the baby, but keeps Blue Kangaroo - the only toy she can't do without. They both sleep soundly that night!
***Opinion***
I love these books as they have fabulous illustrations in pastel colours, with lots of pinks, greens, yellow and blues. I especially like the use of blue and purple for the bedtime scenes. The repetitive nature of the books is good for young readers, as the more you read it to them, the more they begin to recognise the words. 'Rolled over' is repeated 7 times, so children can begin to follow the pattern of the words.
In particular, the list of animals given to Lily is repeated over ...
who wanted bright colourful books and captivating stories.
The book has the board pages so they are not easily ripped.
The book starts off
'I saw a secret seahorse deep down in the sea'
Whoever is narrating the story tries to swim along side the seahorse as it swims past corals and fishes but it is too fast for her. She tries to find the seahorse by asking things like octopuses along the way. Eventually she finds a secret cave but was scared to go inside.
'Then in the cave I saw a glint and guess who greeted me?'
I am not going to tell you the answer to that.
The pictures are designed to look to me like felt collages. - For example a crab looks like it is felt stitched together with buttons for eyes and the shells look like the pattern is stitched on.
I have just asked my ...
