I have to admit that the only reason I ever picked up this play was when I studied it for a Literature exam, but since I read it the first time I just had to read it at least another 10 times afterwards! I've even made my boyfriend act out the scenes with me, the shouting matches really are a good de-stresser! Edward Albee has an uncanny ability to discomfort any audience, and this case he uses George and Martha, an often violent and constantly arguing couple, who make both their guests and the reader extremely uneasy. Many will be shocked by the vicious games this couple plays with each other, masking their own shortcomings and problems at the heart of their relationship. Albee exposes the deep flaws and problems which can exist at the heart of the 'American dream' in an enticing and entertaining, but ultimately moving way. Top marks, a fantastic read, particularly if you have enjoyed other plays within the 'Theatre of the Absurd' genre.
