Whenever I need any serious DIY materials it is always Wickes that I head for. Although the store is about seven miles from my home the journey is worthwhile when I need some large materials.
When you go to this store everything is laid out in a good logical order so there is normally no problem in finding what I want. Also we receive a free booklet every few months listing all of the items that the store sells. This gives me the opportunity to browse through the booklet at my leisure and to make a list of the items I want to buy and how much it is all going to cost.
I have always found that the staff at the store are very practical and helpful and when you ask about some materials they always seem to have the time to help you make the right choice over what to buy. I am sure that for some materials I may be able to get them a bit cheaper from a builders merchants. However I find that when I go to a trade establishment the staff expect you know exactly what you want and don’t easily tolerate people like me who don’t know the difference between one type of sand and another. This is not the case at Wickes where I have found that the staff are quite happy to explain the difference between the different types of materials.
Normally when I am ordering any materials I have them delivered. The system for having items delivered is very well organised. You just go to the customer services desk and tell them what you need and tell them when you want it delivered. You then just part with some money and the items arrive. Normally delivery is on a weekday although they will deliver smaller items on a Saturday. For very large items that require a crane, such as bricks, in this area there is only one day of the week that these can be delivered. Our day for the crane is Tuesday.
Unfortunately they cannot give a time of day for deliveries, but they have always come on the day they have promised. There is a delivery charge and this depends on how far you live from the store. For deliveries to my house they charge £13. Also if the weight of the delivery exceeds a certain amount (I think it is one tonne) there is an additional £5 charge. At first this does seem quite a lot of money but for the savings in time, energy and wear and tear on my car, this is money well spent. Also by having large quantities delivered it means that you can sometimes take advantage of some of the bulk buying discounts, which offsets the delivery charge.
All of the materials I have bought from Wickes have been first class and I have never had any reason to complain.
Wickes is not the store to go to if you want a pretty door handle or a new lampshade, but for good quality DIY materials then this is the store to go to.
If you are after any serious DIY materials then I would highly recommend Wickes.
Advantages: Excellent range at keenest prices. If you're a woman you can get a bloke to help you... Disadvantages: A boring experience if you are female and with a male who only gets enthusiastic when he is in Wickes
...the things we needed from Wickes EG. a bathroom suite (which cost much less than elsewhere and is just as good), toilet seats plus other bits for bathrooms, our UPVC double-glazed windows (which fitted perfectly everytime and not one has had a blown seal causing condensation to get trapped between the panes), paving slabs, sand, concrete, ballast, wood, screws, nails, tape-measures, plumbing bits, paint/brushes, radiators, water butts... and we are ... ...would not buy again from Wickes are taps- because ours keep breaking and have to be replaced after 14 months... and they wont replace them after the guarantee of 1 year has expired. Apparently, once the design has been changed they cannot get old stock... And their cheapest wheel-barrows- cos as soon as you put anything in it, its joints give way alarmingly.
We did buy their own brand of jig-saw and we thrashed this to death, cos we had to do DIY ...

Advantages: Good products, friendly and helpful staff Disadvantages: None that I know of!
Wickes is a large DIY store. It stocks everything from odd bits like door handles, paint, light fittings and screws to kitchen and bathroom suites. It is the best place in our area for getting the best balance between cheap vs. quality, and as such a lot of small businesses in our area use Wickes for purchasing materials. I have been to Wickes many times as I love DIY and am always redoing the house. I have to say that most of the staff are pretty ... ...at them, lol! Wickes do email you from time to time and send you offers available online that you cannot get in store. They can have offers on certain items or maybe 10% off; so it is worth signing up, especially if you are planning on a big project. All in all, I would highly recommend Wickes. I have bought a lot of things from them and have never had any problems, with them, or their products. ...

Advantages: Excellent prices Disadvantages: Relatively limited range
What Wickes excels at is a good basic range of building and DIY products at excellent prices. Most of it is Wickes' own brand but that's not a problem. It's probably made by the same manufacturers as the known Brands anyway. Recent example; a Harrison Drape curtain track on sale for £32.99 in Homebase is boxed in Wickes' own brand packaging for £14.99. If Wickes can make a profit at £14.99 then how much are Homebase making?
Building materials, wood, ... ...trade outlets like Travis Perkins, Wickes is the place most trade people get their stuff from.
The only real shortcoming I find is the relatively limited range Wickes have on offer. They have the most common building products and materials but not that much more.
B&Q Supercentres are generally the second best option in terms of cost, but they do have a much more extensive range than the other sheds. Standard B&Q shops are ok. The main problem B&Q ...

Advantages: None I can think of Disadvantages: The worst service I have ever received - anywhere!
...I received a call from Wickes customer services to inform me that my delivery date was to be June 3rd. I was told that if I did not accept this date, it could be at least six weeks before another one could be arranged. Reluctantly, I agreed and pulled out all the stops to ensure that the base would be ready in time. On yhe morning of the supposed delivery, I got a call from the delivery driver to inform me that my conservatory was not complete and ... ...I got a call from Wickes on July 2nd to tell me that there were still some parts missing, but as these were roof parts I could begin without them and I would receive them on the 11th. Again I reluctantly accepted delivery and was told I would get a call in the morning the give me an approximate delivery time. I did not receive a call, so I called them. I had been waiting 20 minutes to be answered when the delivery van pulled up outside.
I received ...

Advantages: Loyalty card ,useful for frequent shoppers , quality goods. Disadvantages: Lack of choice , more expensive than competitors
I live in quite a large town . I am therefore lucky enough to have a variety of DIYstores to choose from , eg. Homebase , B & Q , Wickes , Focus Do It All etc. , so I tend to shop around for things.
If you go by their TV ads , Homebase will be the only place to go ( providing you have enough hours in the day ! ).
Experience however , tells you differently.
I tend to find them expensive , even when doing those 10% off days . Additionally , their range of goods could also be improved upon . This said though certain areas such as housewares , window blinds etc. , are far better than say B & Q , and they do offer a worktop cutting service instore which is very unusual .
Being a keen gardener , I often check out their garden centre . Prices on plants etc are again expensive , but you do pay for a quality product , so it's swings ...
