Wii Fit is exactly what it sounds like. A game designed to help you get into shape! This game is clearly aimed for those that want to lose a bit of weight, but don't enjoy exercise. And I think it works!
The game is currently retailling at £70, which might seem a little steep. But that's because it comes with it's own board - yep, most of this game is played using your feet! The board itself is very sturdy, and very accurate. There have been problems with the accuracy of the wiimote on previous games that can cause it to stop being fun because it just doesn't work like it's supposed to - not so with the board! It does an excellent job at working out how far over you're leaning, how much pressure you're using, etc etc.
The game starts off with a quick talk from your helpful buddy, the wii board. It tells you the basics about the program and you pick your mii. You tell it some facts about you, such as your height and your date of birth, and it then weighs you and comes up with your BMI. Your mii changes to reflect that - in my step dad's case, he is overweight so he ended up with a fat mii. I'm underweight, so I got a lanky looking one. It's all a bit of fun, and if you don't like other people knowing your weight you can password protect it so others can't pry. You can also choose a goal for yourself. For example, you might want to lose ten pounds in a month, gain weight, maintain a weight - whatever you want! The wii will advise you as to whether your goal is
likely to happen, but really it's up to you what you pick. After that you do your first test. In this case, it's one that measures your centre of gravity and your balance. There are two lines, each with a blue bar on, and you must lean and place your weight accordingly and hold it when it's in the blue bars - this is actually a lot harder than it sounds, especially actually keeping in place when you've finally got it right! After this the wii calculates your 'fitness age'. Fans of the brain training games will be used to this already, and it's exactly the same concept. (In my case, 33. Being 20 years old, this is quite distressing!)
All of the format beind this game is very similar to the brain training games, and also follows the same system as the Wii Sports testing. To those who haven't played them, the idea is that you take a fitness test every day (which will be formed of random games and tests) and are then given your fitness age. The younger is of course the better! It tracks your age and your bmi as you go along so you can look at the chart and see how well you're doing.
There are four sections of games. In each case, you are limited to which games you can choose at the beginning. However the more you play, the more points you earn, and are able to unlock more games. You are able to choose what fitness trainer you want at the beginning, either a male or a female. They will coach you through the games and complain if you are doing things wrong! The sections you can choose from are:
AEROBIC EXERCISES: These will take up a lot more energy than you realise! The first game involves you moving your hips as if you were trying to keep a hula hoop up. You must then lean over in order to catch the hula hoops that other Miis are throwing at you - without letting the other hula hoops drop. This game lasts just over a minute and will wear you out a lot more than you're expecting! It's hard work and you'll feel like a moron if there are other people in the room, but that's the beauty of the wii!
BALANCE: These are probably the sort of games you were expecting. They involve shifting your weight around basically, in games such as tightrope walking and skiing. The first game you'll try involves you as a goalie in a football match. Balls and various other objects are thrown at you, and it's your job to lean to successfully head the footballs - and avoid everything else! It's extremely precise, and I am absolutely horrendous at this.
MUSCLE STRETCHES: Exactly what it sounds like! You basically copy your fitness trainer in various exercises whilst the wii measures how much wobbling you're doing and how much you favour one side of your body. The first game you'll try here seems simple enough; lifting one leg and bringing it backwards and forwards six times. But of course, nothing is as easy as it seems!
YOGA; These basically ask you to balance in various positions. Sounds easy, right? You'd be surprised! During these games you simply copy what your chosen fitness trainer is doing - and try not to fall over ;) You'll start with simple breathing exercises, and eventally make your way up to much more complicated poses.
I've only listed the first game you'll try in detail, as I personally find it much more fun to discover new games and experiences for myself. What's the point of buying something when you already know exactly what's going to happen? As you improve you can change the difficulty and the number (for example increasing the number of push ups, or jogging for a longer period of time) as well as unlock new games to try out.
The games don't exactly sound revolutionary, but they're not supposed to. This game is clearly aimed at people that want to keep fit, but don't really enjoy exercising. Yes, you could easily do push ups or whatever by yourself - but if you're anything like me, you just don't want to! And having your coach encourage you to continue and telling you what to do certainly helps me out. Whenever I've tried to do exercises on my own before I've become bored and lost interest almost straight away, but having something tell me off for stopping is a real help! Yes, you could go jogging on your own, but the settings on screen are much more interesting and you don't feel quite so stupid doing it in the privacy of your own home. If you're anything like me, you lose interest in exercise really quickly. You might have one healthy day, and that's the end of it! Well, the competition aspect of wii fit certainly changes that! You can replay games as many times as you want in order to try and increase your score (that hula hoop game will be the death of me) and there's a leader board so you can see how well you're doing when compared to your friends and family.
This game is pretty pricy, but I really enjoy it. It's fun, it helps keep you in shape, and it enables you to try out a huge variety of games you couldn't do with just the wiimore. I'd definitley recommend you try and get this. A game about exercise may not seem fun, but I can assure you that with the Nintendo touch, it is!

Excellent review. I love this game it's like having a fitness trainer at you beck and call whenever you need one :O). We've had ours for a few weeks now and it's still a giggle - especially the hula hooping, and like you say it's not as easy as it sounds. I also like the fact you can use a password for your profile if you need one. Very informative review - thanks for the read. :O) Nicola
