This Christmas I was lucky enough to get (and I say lucky because they have pretty much been sold out wherever you look) my hands on a Wii fit. For those of you not in the know, a Wii fit is a video game, made by Nintendo, intended for play on the Wii console machine. Wii Fit was released in Japan on December 1, 2007, and in other regions in April and May 2008

As everyone is making resolutions at this time of the year I thought it would be a good time to write about my experiences with the board and my attempts to get fit by using it.

The Wii fit is predominately an exercise game which uses a Wii Balance Board to allow simulated and real life like games. I think first and foremost I would say that the Wii fit should be used and viewed as just a guide for getting fit. I would never recommend this to anyone in the hopes that they were going to get fit by solely using this machine. Yes, it's good, it makes kids and adults alike get active and makes exercise enjoying and fun but it's a low intensity workout and in my opinion should only be used as part of your everyday exercise. I also say you should think of it as a guide when it comes to the part where you weigh yourself. Now, I know that can be traumatic for some people and I'd hate for this game to be off-putting for people just because of that. I will go into more detail further but when you stand on the board it not only gives your you BMI (Body Mass Index) but it also gives you your weight and tells you if you are underweight/overweight or not. Obviously I would look at what it says but don't take it as set in stone. I know sometimes I stand on it and am one weight and then an hour later it differs quite a bit so use it as a tool in your exercise and weight loss but don't look at it as your weight loss bible and pin all your hopes on it, that's all I'm saying. The activities are designed to provide a core workout, emphasizing controlled movements rather than overexertion. With all that said, it's actually a really fun game and if you use it as just a game I believe you will have hours worth of enjoyment.

Like I said the Wii fit comes with a balance board which is probably a little bigger than if you stand on it shoulder width apart. You place the board on the floor where you have room around you and then press the on button on the actual board. The board itself is quite heavy and I think can take the weight of up to 23 stone. It's also very sturdy and does not move when placed on the floor so there is no danger of slipping etc. The board takes 4 AA size batteries to work.

The balance board measures a user's weight and center of balance. The software can then calculate the user's body mass index when told of his or her height.

You can use your Mii character to play on the Wii Fit. If you log on everyday you can do a daily body test which tracks your age, weight and balance. This is then tracked on your own graph so you can see how you are performing over time in terms of weight loss. When you first play the game you are asked to come up with a goal for yourself such as "lose 5 pounds in a month" and this is what is tracked to see your progress.

If you want though you can bypass this and just go straight onto the games/exercises. There are approximately 40 different games you can play, broken up into a number of different categories. These are as follows:

Yoga
Muscle workouts
Aerobic Exercises
Balance Games.

The Yoga section has a number of different yoga poses that you can do with the help of an on screen trainer. You can pick either a man or a woman trainer and I picked the young fit looking man in his tracksuit. They then talk you through the pose and demonstrate it for you and you can follow by watching them on screen. I think this section possess a good basic selection of yoga poses and helps if you forget them by showing you how to do them.

The aerobic exercises feature such games as step aerobics, hula hooping and jogging. The step is really good. You follow the step movements on the screen that the other Mii's are doing and watch the foot pattern as it comes up on the screen. The Wii board lends itself so well to step and it's really fun to try and beat your previous score. If you get your timing just right you get a perfect score, if you step just off time you get an ok and if you miss a step then you don't get points for that bit. Once you get good at that activity or play it a certain number of times you unlock a more rigorous version of that activity.

Hula Hooping is fun as you simulate the movements of actually playing with a hula hoop and it counts the number of revolutions you make. The great thing with the Wii I think is that if I was actually using a real hula hoop I would probably get bored but the Wii urges me on to beat the computer and get a better score each time so it's definitely a very good incentive.

As you continue to play the game you release new activities by spending more and more time on the machine. You gain "Fit Credits", which are accumulated in the "FitBank", a small piggy bank dedicated to keep track of time spent on Wii Fit. This is true for all the different categories of game.

The balance games are some of my favourites. These include ski jumping, ski slaloms and heading footballs. The ski jumping almost makes you feel like you are really about to do a ski jump. You get in the position a ski jumper would adopt and then fly down the mountain, raises your legs at the right moment to simulate a jump and see the number of points you accumulate. This is a great game to play against friends to see who can get the highest score. The slalom is the same in that you adopt a skiing position and aim to make it through the gates on your way to the bottom. I like the graphics in his game. The snow is somewhat realistic and it makes a swishing noise when you go down which to me really does sound like the sound of snow and skiing. Of course you have lots of Mii characters in the crowd cheering you along as you go!

Since September 30th, 2008 Nintendo has apparently sold 8.76 million copies of the Wii Fit worldwide. I bought mine for £69.99 and do believe it was worth every penny and would recommend this product to anyone!
