Last Christmas, my mum (a.k.a. "Santa") got the family a Wii Fit - hinting at my sister and I that we need to keep fit. I'm going to admit, I'm a bit fat. Now, I'm not one of those people you see in documentaries who can't get out of bed because they're huge but I could stand to lose a stone or two. I used to go to the gym twice a week but I found it too difficult and it was straining keeping up with my trainer, and I felt embarassed whenever I told him I couldn't do something. I did lose about half a stone though so I was happy about that. When I started using the Wii fit I was a bit anxious about trying it out because it had been a while since I'd been to the gym and I wasn't too keen to let my family see how unfit I was! However, I've been using it on-and-off since Christmas and it's great! It's been about a month since I last used it but it was helping me lose weight and I could see myself getting thinner. In the rest of my review I will review as many of the features of the Wii Fit as I can, hopefully without boring you out of buying it!
Creating a Profile
It was back in December when I created my profile but I think it's just a case of selecting your Mii (a character you create in the Wii which can be used in other games, including Wii Sports) then letting it do a body test for the first time (you might be able to skip this - I'm not sure). Whatever it is you do, I know it's easy because both my gran and papa have created profiles themselves so it can't be too difficult.
Daily Tests
Every day when you go on, your encouraged to take a body test. This measures your weight and BMI and tells you your centre of gravity. Whats that? Your centre of gravity is some crap they seem to have made up to encourage you
to the yoga activities every day. It's really how balanced you are, for example my balance was 48.9% Left and 51.1% Right at the last test so I've got almost perfect balance.
Next up is the optional Athletic Tests. These are also a measure of your balance but are used to determine your Wii Fit age. My last Wii Fit age was 19 - 3 years older than I actually am! The balance tests include walking on the spot and twisting and turning to try and hit blue squares with your red dot.Once you've completed the daily tests you get a stamp on the calendar. This is similar to Brain and Sight Training for the DS, where you get a stamp for every day that you use the software. There are 8 stamp designs to unlock. The final one is unlocked when you've collected 30 stamps and it's a picture of your Mii - it's my favourite stamp. You can use whatever stamp you want but you can't change a stamp on the calendar. When I started playing, I alternated the stamps every month so my calendar has a bit of variety to it but still matches (I have OCPD so I obsess over things sometimes and like things to be the same).
Ultimate Balance Test
If you think you're doing well in the body tests then I suggest you try this - it'll knock you down a peg or two! The object of this game is to get your balance dead on 50:50 for 3 seconds in the final stage. I've never completed it but there are 3 stages and I've managed to get through two of them.
In most of the poses/workouts/exercises/games you get a score and a star rating. This helps you see whether or not your doing things right but isn't always accurate.
Yoga
This is my least favourite part of the Wii Fit, mainly because I can't do most of the poses without falling over. There are 15 poses to master, each with only one difficulty level. The only two I can get four stars in is deep breathing and the shoulder stand (because they are increadibly easy. Yoga is scored based on your balance during the poses. That means if you wobble all over the place your probably not going to get better than one star! You can be doing the pose perfectly but if you move even slightly off your score will go down!
To be honest, I don't see the point in doing yoga at all. All you do is bend to the side slightly and if you can't do it right it can really hurt! However, many people seem to do it - maybe it is good for you! Some even do it for fun! I've also heard it's useful if you like doing exotic things in bed :).
Muscle Workouts
I spend most of my Wii Fit time (or, I try to at least) on the muscle workouts. Until May of this year, I was still being forced to do P.E. (punishment exercise, or is it physical education - no, I think the first one is right). Thankfully, we didn't have showers so I didn't have to get completely naked in front of everyone - I just had to strip down to my underwear - but that meant that everyone could still see the rest of my body. I'm a bit overweight and unlike the other guys I'm not very muscly.Since the gym thing didn't work out, I thought this might make me super strong and muscly! Unfortunately, I'm not quite a bodybuilder yet but I'm getting there. When I've been using the Wii Fit, I've seen definate improvement in the whole muscle area.
I think the best thing about these workouts is that you can choose the amount of reps you can do and you can only do a lot of reps by unlocking them. This is good because it means cocky beginners are less likely to over-exert themselves the first time they use the software.
Aerobic Exercises
There are 4 different types of exercise - Hula Hoop, Step, Jogging and Boxing. My favourite is boxing and I'm quite good at step. However, I think my performance in Hula Hoop could be better. I gathered this from my mum and sister's histerical laughter when I was doing the exercise.
Hula Hoop, Step and Jogging have two levels each - beginner and advanced. Step and Jogging also have an unlockable freestyle option where you can do the exercise any way you want. Boxing on the other hand has three timed levels - lasting 3, 6 and 10 minutes respectively. I usually go for the 10 minute workout - it's a lot more difficult but it's really fun.
Balance Games
There are 9 games in this section but three of them are really similar. They are all about finding your centre of gravity and are supposed to be easier the more yoga you do (I doubt it, though). I'm not going to tell you all the games just a few of them. My favourite game is Heading, where you have to move your body to the left, right or centre to head the footballs while dodging football shoes (which lose you 1 point) and panda heads (-3 points). You get between 1 and 10 points for each ball you head - 1 for the first ball, 2 for the second and so on until the tenth ball after which you get 10 points for every ball. This game also has two levels (Beginner and Advanced) and I've managed to master them both. I've played the game a total of 103 times (this was the count the last time I went on) and have a high score of 551 in advanced.
My next favourite game is table tilt - you move your body around in order to move a table on the screen which has holes in it. Your job is to manouver balls around the table and get them into the holes to progress to the next level. It seems easy but it can be quite challenging. I'm good at this game but my sister has the high score of 125. There are also two difficulty levels for this game.
Fit Cash
Every training game gets you Fit Cash - a measure of how much time you've spent on the Wii Fit. It doesn't always give you an accurate amount of minutes, though - for example, if you complete the 10 minute boxing exercise you actually get 13 minutes. Also most of the Yoga exercises are quite short but give 2 minutes of Fit Cash.Fit Cash goes into a Fit Piggy bank which tells you how much time you've spent on the Wii Fit. There are 4 different Fit Piggies:
There is a lot more I could talk about but this is all I'm going to write for now. This is a game you'll love - especially if you're trying to get fit.
