If you have just brought a Nintendo wii you going to be looking pretty soon at getting some more games and especially getting an extra controller because let's face it wii sport just isn't the same without two people. That is the position that I found myself in and within a couple of days I was off down to the shops to try and get another control Wii remote. When I got to the shops after looking around I found that generally I could get a remote on its own for about 29 pounds, or I could get a remote with Wii play for about 34 pounds. Best price I could find for we remote anywhere at HMV could actually buy using my 10% student discount a remote with Wii play cheaper than I could get a remote at other places in town. We play consists of nine mini games which are aimed at teaching you to use the Wii remote better, to this end are quite good and some of the games are fun even after the first few times, although after a while this game does not hold much replay value for the more avid or mature gamer. Saying this is my girlfriend absolutely loves them she can kick my ass any time even though she is pretty much a non-gamer.
Starting up the game is easy first time round, you simply launch the game through the wii Channel menu, select the amount of players (unfortunately only one or two), then choose your mii character to act as avatars in game and a click which game you want to play. The first time through nine games you have to play them in order in order to unlock the next game in the row but after this you can just jump in at any point. Apart from actually playing the game against somebody there isn't much in the way of extras, you get high scores rankings for each game and the chance to unlock medals for your character depending on your performance.
Stage one: shooting range; the first game you play is an arcade style light
gun shooting game, in this game, you shoot at targets that are one after another. This is good practice in aiming to wii remote. According to the wii and the instructions that it gives you. During the game you simply point and click the a button to shoot at targets such as balloons, and is, faces, bull's-eyes and even clay pigeons and ducks reminiscent of duck hunt on the NES. The graphics in this game are the classic mii cartoony Nintendo style, and when two players compete against each other they compete for the high score. If you feel like a bit of a gunslinger you could even play this game with a remote in each hand, this is suggested in the manual probably because there is very little else you can do to make this game or interesting.
Stage two: find MII; this game actually requires a bit of thinking and can get quite tricky during the later stages, selection of MIIs you have to find either lookalikes, or odd ones out. It starts out simply a group of six also facing you but then puts them in situations like escalators, in space, swimming watching tennis or standing in the dark which makes it very hard believe me. According to the manual Nintendo designed this game to further improve your practice in aiming to wii remote as you race against time to click on the correct faces. I think that this is one of the best games on wii play, it certainly has the most to it and does get quite frustrating at times.
Stage three: table tennis; in this game you either compete against the computer or another player, the aim is to get you good at manipulating the wii remote fast while still being accurate. All you have to do in the game however is move the paddle from left-to-right by moving to wii remote, as long as you get in the right place computer will automatically hit the ball for you. This really is in one of the best games and I was bored even on my first play through, (this is me because my girlfriend was laughing at my face the whole time) even so on further gameplay through I was definitely convinced of the awkward gameplay in this mini game.
Stage four: pose mii; in this mini game you must twist your mii to it into shape bubbles that fall at different angles from the top to the bottom of the screen, whilst also cycling through three different poses by using the a and B. buttons. If bubble reaches the bottom of the screen without you fitting into it it counts as a miss, three misses and the game is over. As you might expect this game is designed to help you become accustomed to the wii remotes ability to twist and turn. It is an interesting game to begin with but not hard, this is its downfall however because you'll end up playing it so long that you missed the bubbles on purpose just to finish.
State five: laser hockey; like the previous game this game is supposed to be good practice thing and moving the wii remote. If you played this game in real life you will know what to do otherwise is pretty simple anyway, simply use your paddle to hit the puck into your opponents goal. This game probably takes the longest get the hang of once you got the hang of it is definitely one of the most playable games in the collection. By twisting the remote and moving the pointer you can to twist and move your paddle on screen. In two player mode the winner is the first player to reach eight points.
Stage six: billiards; in this game you are supposed to practice your pointing skills and hitting, firstly you aim by moving left and right on the direction pad then you press the b button to look at the cue ball. You used the pointing function to select a spot on the ball to hit, by hitting the cue ball centre it is possible to give the ball spin. You then press the button again and move wii remote forwards and backwards as if it was a pool que to hit the ball. That is pretty much it for this game, the gameplay isn't brilliant or competitive but it will get used to using the remote three-dimensional motion sensing abilities.
Stage seven: Fishing; this is the first game that really gets you moving the remote through space in three dimensions with you being able to see the effects translated directly, if not perfectly then pretty well on the screen. The graphics win with the fish in two dimensions but with three-dimensional fishing rods, the style of the fish are as if they've been drawn on paper and cut out by children. It's supposed to be good practice for moving the remote vertically side to side and I get is that is you have to keep quite still in order to catch a fish and then strike up when the fish bite.
Stage eight: charge!; this is a strange game in which you hold the remote as if it was an NES original game pad but you control the cow which you ride around the course by tilting forwards and backwards left and right. The aim of the game is to get used to tilting what you ride a cow along a track jumping hurdles and knocking over scarecrows to get points.
Stage nine: tanks!; this is a slightly more tactical game which allows you to use the nun chuck control if you wish. Although if you choose to use and on to control with two people both players must have one. In the game you shells and minds destroy your enemy and is supposed to be good practice at pointing was using either the directional pad or the nun chuck stick for movement. The view is a bird's eye view where you had to move around a level and destroy the enemy tanks, very much like an early arcade game.
Once you have completed all nine games according to Nintendo you should be fully efficient in all aspects of remote controlling. Although the games of very simple and do not offer a lot of replay value, they are very much enjoyed by children or non-gamers who prefer a short simple and still fun game. In my in it is definitely worth buying this game with the remote in a package rather than just buying a remote on its own, wii play ended up only costing me a couple of pounds and because of this this collection of nine mini games is definitely good value for money, especially since early on in your wii gaming life is when you are likely to buy this game and you'll probably have a collection of games that is thin on the ground if you don't already have a game cube. Also it is worth a few extra Nintendo club points if you collect those like I do, it has been announced that soon you will be able to transfer Nintendo club points into wii points for buying games online, so the just buying this game adding it to your wii you might be able to download some old classics for free in the near future.
The graphics of the game are nothing to jump at, but they do have a certain Nintendo charm. The sound is pretty simple to but fits the game quite well. Another thing which I like about the game is the fact that you can use your miis. Not too much time was spent developing this game and there's only really a few games in the collection which had any replay value at all, they said it is exceptional value for money especially if you get a discount for buying online for example and new gamers and young children will really enjoy too. If you have just bought a wii then I would definitely recommend when you just another controller that you get it in the wii play bundle!
