Wii Play is a game released in 2006 for the Nintendo Wii game console.
I decided to buy Wii Play just after christmas as I needed another remote for the Wii - I had been given a Nintendo Wii for christmas but it only came with one remote. I also wanted to try new games. Nintendo Wii was the obvious choice as the game and remote came as a bundle.
I brought it from Amazon.co.uk for £29.90 (with free shipping as I was trying out Amazon Prime at the time). A bargain considering a remote costs around £30.00 on it's own. The game is advertised as having a 'free' remote with it but in reality it's more like getting a free game with the remote.
When you start the game you'll release there are 9 games but only 1 is available to play (which is Shooting Range). This is because you can only open each game as you play the one before.
The first game is Shooting Range which has 5 different levels which get harder and faster the more they go on. To aim and shoot you need to move the remote around and press the 'B' button. It can be played by one or two players. The first level is shooting balloons - the balloons come up from the bottom of the screen and float up towards the top, you have to pop them all or as many as you can for points. The second level is shooting targets - different targets pop up and you have to shoot them before they dissapear. Some of the targets have your Mii's face on which give you extra points and if you are playing two player their Mii's face will pop up too. The third level is shooting flying discs - the discs look as if being thrown into the distance. The fourth level is shooting cans - the cans are thrown into your view, you have to shoot
them as soon as you see them which makes them bounce. If you keep them up for long enough you get extra points. The last level is shooting UFOs - There is a line up of 6 Mii's (they are all your Mii) which get beamed up and taken away by the UFOs, you have to shoot the UFOs down to save your Mii's. The more Mii's are left at the end, the more points you get. The game is very similar to the 1980s Duck Hunt game made for the NES and pays tribute to it by throwing a few overhead ducks in throughout the game for bonus points. It is an okay game and probably one of the best. It can get a little boring after a while but can be fun and competative when playing two player.
The second game is Find Mii. For those who are unaware what a Mii is - a Mii is a little character which is used during Wii games (you also have Mii's of yourself which you can create from scratch) - they come in all shapes, sizes and colours. The object of this game is to spot the Mii in different situations. Before each round the game tells you which Mii or Mii's you need to identify. If you do not identify the Mii or Mii's within the alocated time then the game automatically ends, the game carries on to the next level every time you find the Mii or Mii's you have been asked to find. This differs when the game is played by two players - the first to find the Mii or Mii's wins. Different situations include in a crowd, swimming, in the dark (with a torch) and odd one out. It reminds me of a modern day Where's Wally! It might sound slightly odd, boring or easy to some but this is actually one of my favourites and can get quiet hard.
The third game is Table Tennis which can be played by one player (versus computer) or two players. You have to swing the Wii remote as if it were a table tennis bat and get a rally going, the more hits you get the more your points go up. I have played many table tennis games in my time and this doesn't really compare to any of them, infact it's rather weak. I suppose it can be fun for a few minutes and can pass the time but it doesn't rank high in my books.
The fourth game is Pose Mii. This is a very strange game and is probably going to be hard to explain. Bubbles float down from the top of the screen and inside the bubbles are outlines of Mii's in different poses, you have to change your Mii into doing the correct pose and put it into the centre of the bubbles before they fall to the floor and burst. When a bubbles bursts the game is over. When playing two player, the person with the most bubbles completed wins. If you manage to get a multicoloured bubble this will freeze time where you can go around and get the other bubbles. The game gets harder and faster the longer the game goes on. I find this game to be really mind numbing and silly but slightly addictive. Probably more suitable for younger people or people who like to keep it simple.
The fifth game is Laser Hockey. I think this is one of my favourites purely because I love real life air hockey. You can play one player (versus computer) or two player. It's a really basic game which has a neon puck, 2 neon 'bats' and 2 goals. The aim of the game is to guard your goal from your opponent and try to score in your opponents goal. You can move the remote backwards, forwards, up and down, and at different angles to position the bat. The winner of one player is the person who has the most goals in 2 minutes, the winner of two player is the first player to score eight goals. This is one of the more basic games but probably my favourite, it sends me unneccsarily competative! Might not be for everybody but proves quite a laugh for me on two player.
The sixth game is Fishing. This game consists of dipping your fishing rod into a pond and waiting for fish to bite on it. When you get a bite the remote shakes and you have to pull back on it to pull the fish out of the water. Most fish gain you points but some lose you points. You get bonus points for fish which are pictured in the corner of the screen and change throughout the game. It's kind of sweet and okay but too boring for me. The game is too easy, slow and you have to rely on luck for the most of it. I'd sooner give it to my 2 year old than play it regularly myself!
The seventh game is Billiards which is the worst game in my opinion. I can't grasp the game, I find it boring, hard and generally rubbish. It might appeal to those who like snooker type games but not to me. You play the game as if you would a real game of 9 ball billiards.
The eighth game is Charge. This is a game where you ride on a cow and use the Wii remote to guide him down a track where you need to charge at various scarecrows along the way. You need to hold the remote sideways for this one and it can be played by one or two players. The cow can jump fences if you jolt the remote upwards and can run faster if you tilt the the remote fowards. You gain extra points if you charge moving scarecrows and cross the finish line with time left on the clock. This is a bit of lighthearted fun which doesn't rely on too much skill. I generally find it more entertaining when playing on two player, but alike many of the games it doesn't hold my attention for long.
The ninth game and probably second poorest game is Tanks. You can either play this using the remote and nunchuck or just the remote by itself (I haven't used the nunchuck as it probably isn't any easier than using the remote). The aim of the game is to manoeuvre around the screen avoiding tanks. If you get hit by a missile from one of the tanks it is game over. If you defeat the tanks by shooting them or if they drive over one of your mines then you move on to the next level where the tanks get larger and more advanced. It might sound quite fun and old school but I just find it a drag. Again, too basic and doesn't hold my attention for long.
Overall I wouldn't really recommend this game unless you need a Wii remote, then I definitely would (it's a game for free after all). Most of the games seem like low budget arcade games and none of them really give me much entertainment for more than 5 or 10 minutes. There is not much skill needed and most of the games are pretty mind numbing. On the upside some of the games may appeal to certain types of people and it is also a game that everybody should be able to grasp, even youngsters and old people (the game is suitable for 3+). I think this game would be a total dissapointment if brought on it's own, without the remote. I've only had the urge to play it a handful of times. There are plenty of other much better Wii games for you to spend your money on.
