I recently hired Wii play from Tesco DVD Rentals to see if I liked it before buying it and I enjoyed it a lot so I thought I would review it for all of you.
Wii Play is the kind of game that is great for when you have a group of friends around with several different mini-games to play. There is a multi-player function allowing for two people to play at once. Because the games are short, (a minute or so max), you can all take it turns to play without anyone getting bored whilst still allowing enough time for toilet/cuppa breaks.
There are seven different mini-games on Wii Play and these are:
Shooting Range: This is my favourite game and it involves shooting at various moving targets. There are five levels each with a different type of target each getting steadily more difficult. There are balloons, cans, targets, clay pigeons, (which are quite hard to hit) and even spaceships. On every level there are ducks that you can hit for extra points. To play this it’s simply a case of point and shoot using
just the Wii remote only.
Find Mii: This game is quite boring in my opinion and you have to find pairs of matching Miis, (your little avatar thingys), or find the fastest Mii or the odd ones out etc. The odd Mii out round is a bit weird at first because it isn’t immediately apparent but once you crack it it’s quite easy. There seem to be a lot of levels, (I’ve reached forty something), but I don’t know how many. This is a simple point and click arrangement using just the Wii Remote.
Table Tennis: This game is quite difficult but strangely addictive. I can’t say I really enjoyed playing it but I couldn’t stop playing it either. The thing that makes it tricky is the three dimension aspect of the game. You have to move the remote up and down to move backwards and forwards on the table, (i.e. closer to or further away from the net), and left and right to move the paddle left and right. The up and down takes some getting used to and I often find that bat is either too close to the net, (this counts as an obstruction and the point gets awarded to your opponent), or too far back in which case it doesn’t register your bat at all. If it wasn’t for the frustrating controls this would be a great game.
Pose Mii: Pose me is a quick paced game that is a little tricky to master. You have to press the A button on the Wii Remote and the trigger at the same time to pose your Mii into the position shown on the bubbles. The bubbles float down the screen and you have to pull the pose in each bubble before it reaches the bottom. It’s a bit mad but good fun too.
Laser Hockey: This suffers a bit from the same frustrating controls as the table tennis but to a lesser degree. You have a bat the shaped of a used staple and you have a bat a small ball around into the goal on the opposite side. It’s a lot like air hockey really and it’s reasonably good fun.
Billiards: This is the only billiards/snooker/pool type game that I have ever been able to play. It’s a very simplified version of the game and the controls are intuitive and easy to pick up. I really enjoy this game and will happily have several goes at a time.
Fishing: I love the fishing; you get a rod that you have to move around the screen to catch the fish. There is always a type of fish shown at the top which will double the score if you catch it. There are also little fish, (small fry), which give you -50 points if you catch them so you have to be careful. This is a good game for a bit of simple fun and again it just uses the Wii Remote.
Charge: Charge is another favourite of mine and it involves racing cute knitted cows around a track trying to knock down scarecrows and avoid obstructions like fences and trees. You can make your cow jump by quickly raising the remote in the air. I normally end up in hysterics playing this game! The cows are so cute too, it’s perfect Nintendo entertainment.
Tanks: This is a fairly weak game and the only Wii Play game to use the Nunchuk controller. You have a little tank that you have to move around the screen to shoot the other tanks. I find it too slow paced, too easy and quite boring to be honest.
Over all this is a great little game that all the charm that you would expect from a Nintendo title, the only let down is the odd controls on the Table Tennis and the slightly annoying sound track. It’s great for kids and adults and even though the graphics are basic and the game play simple I would still recommend this game highly.
You can pick this game up for £6.95 on Amazon with free postage or for £28.99 with a controller included.
