Wilkinson's is a discount warehouse store selling low cost items. Rather like Tescos but they sell utility items as well as some general groceries, toiletries, stationery and also some furniture - having said that, Tesco's also do furniture and electrical appliances now (via their Tesco Direct catalogue).
Several years ago, most of Wilkinson's items were only well known brands that were sold at a much lower price. However, over the last couple of years there prices have been creeping up and it was no longer necessarily Wilkinson's who held the lowest prices.
At around the same time Wilkinson's have also been introducing their own branded products. The prices are much lower and surprisingly, the quality is somewhat close and very similar to the more expensive well-known brands. At present I would say Wilkinson's own brand takes up almost half of their products. With a lot of our home cleaning agents we have switched to Wilkinson's own brand. They clean just as well, sometimes with better features and at a much lower price.
My favourite section of products is their stationery and craft section. I find their materials much cheaper there and there is a good variety. They have a good selection of trendy stamps, embossing inks and powders. The shelves are full of embellishment packs, glues, craft scissors and also decorated papers. Their paints are ridiculously cheap - both acrylics, poster paints and also oil pastels. They also have a good range of brushes. However, though at very appealing prices, the quality of the paints and brushes may not meet the needs of a professional or serious artist.
Many of the times that I visit, there is always something new - this relatively new section is still continuously expanding, it's definitely a great place to shop for some bargain art materials.
In terms of the atmosphere of the stores; many of the Wilkinson stores are very large shops. Their motif colours are red and creamy beige - the general atmosphere of the store is generally a 'beigy' feel. Not much has been paid to attention in terms of interior design, but most importantly the stores are usually clean and spacious. A lot of low cost pound sharps have a harsh cold 'feel' to them, this probably just me but generally I find Wilkinson's the opposite and this is one of the best things that set them apart.
The staff are generally friendly and helpful - they are usually wearing tomato red polo shirts with a yellow Wilkinson's logo on. Personally, I have to remember to look for this before I approach anyone - the last time I approached a man with exactly the same polo shirt on who turned out to be just another customer(!) he was not happy...
