"Wilkinson Sword Hydro 5, in my opinion the best razor available"

Wilkinson Sword Hydro 5

Wilkinson Sword Hydro 5

I have always used Gillette in the past. Originally the Mach 3 then the Turbo and most recently the Fusion Power. All truly great razors but I found that if I shaved too often I had a lot of razor burn. After looking at all of the offerings on the Supermarket shelf I felt that it was time for a change. Given that the Gillette replacement razors were among the most expensive on the shelf I decided to go for a Wilkinson Sword. The Hydro 5 is absolutely amazing. From the first run to the last it doesn’t even feel like you are shaving.

Technical Overview

The razor is made up of a metal handle coated in rubber for good grip. It has a detachable head with the following components.

* A rubber agitator that is textured in such a way that it lifts the hair upright as the blade glides over the skin. Extending the hair follicules for a closer cut.

* 5 Ultraglide blades with skin guards. The are designed with a special coating to stop hair from getting trapped between the blades. Obviously reducing irritation as the blade plasses over.

* Advanced Hydrating Gel Reservoir. Longer lasting reservoir compared to other brands. This contains soothing Aloe Vera amongst other things to calm the skin after the blade has passed. This is a fantastic feature and works really well. With most of the Gillette blades the soothing strip would wear out after a couple of uses and you would not feel any benefit at all. Thus increasing the number of times you would replace the blade just down to razor burn, increasing the number of trips to the shops and spending more money on blades. Gillette really know how to make money!!

* Flip trimmer. You can flip back the Gel Reservoir in order to utilise the top of the blade to trim hard to reach areas such as under the nose. Again another great benefit.

Ease of Use

To hold, the razor feels well balanced and comfortable. Thanks to the rubber coated handle and well designed curves. When sitting in the holder, it looks the part. The blades just glide over the skin with no pull at all on your stubble. It only takes one run too, which reduces razor burn immensely.

Running Costs

There are usually some very good bargains to be had on the razors so I won't go into much detail on the difference in price of the razor itself. The main cost to any of these items is in the cost of replacement blades.

The best items to compare would be the Gillette Fusion with the Hydro 5. These boast similar features.

The Gillette Replacement blades currently cost £18.29 for an 8 pack.

Whereas the Wilkinson Sword Hydro 5 currently cost £13.78 for an 8 pack from the same store.

So on comparison it is easy to see that,

1 The Hydro 5 Blades last a lot longer than Gillette.
2 When compared in price the Hydro 5 are around £5 cheaper.

The running costs for this razor are far less compared to most of its competitors. The blades last a lot longer and are a lot cheaper to replace. The razor itself feels fantastic in your hand as well as on your skin and makes the whole experience more pleasurable and efficient.
I use this razor with King of Shaves Shaving Gel and Nivea for Men After Shave lotion. All products together give an excellent all round shave. I generally trust the King of Shaves products more as the manufacturer own products never seem to be up to the job for me.
