I find the weight of the item awkward: a little too light in my hand and the seated angle of the blades makes for an awkward hold whilst trying to shave under the chin and beneath the nose. Unlike the Gillette, I cannot get quite close enough to the underneath of my nostrils.
Yes, I know, based on the pure mathematics of surface area, women have far more hair to shave in the quest for beauty than men, but let's not beat about the bush here (so to speak), ladies can get away with not shaving far easier than men can.
Vest tops make way for t-shirts while skimpy g-strings purchased from La Senza give way quickly to Bridget Jones pants. And I don't care what you say, if you're always seen in jeans or trouser suits, we know there's a Velcro-thigh-thing going on below the crotch line. Honestly, I've lost count of how many times I've told my wife I could light a match on her bikini line before she's got the hint and dug out her Ladyshave.
In contrast, unless us men are either part of a terrorist splinter cell, the Ku Klux Klan, or simply harbour a secret penchant for our grandmother's knitted balaclavas, it really comes down to a supremely complex algorithm of Latin looks, dark skin and sheer good-luck to decide whether we're going to get away without shaving today.
But despite the fact that ladies have the choice of epilators, waxing, electric razors or a good ol' fashioned Bic, us men have to put up with a slightly more simple razor choice. And if we can't be arsed to do it, Sweeney Todd and his mates are waiting down every town centre high street with ridiculously shiny blades, all with great intentions of helping us
Having decided to shave at home, then, the difficulty facing us is the decision of which razor to shave with. My current skin-masher of choice is the Wilkinson Sward Quattro, which was bought in error by my wife when I told her to go out and buy some blades for my Gillette Mach 3. Being as she is a) female, b) a self-certified shopaholic-cum-bargain-hunter, and c) blonde, she decided she'd go with the Wilkinson Sword Quattro because she got a good deal from Boots: the razor (which includes two blades) and an extra cartridge of four more blades for the princely sum of £7.46 (there was 50% off the price of the main razor). Plus, in her eyes, the four blades on the Quattro amounted to better value than the three blades offered by Gillette's product range.
How wrong she was.
Stuck with no option but to have a shave unless I wanted to look like I was about to start selling copies of The Big Issue, I removed the razor from its blister pack, attached a fresh blade, ran it under hot water and lathered up.
The first thing you notice about the Wilkinson Sword Quattro is that it has been designed with aesthetics in mind rather than the removal of facial hair. I find the weight of the item awkward: a little too light in my hand and the seated angle of the blades makes for an awkward hold whilst trying to shave under the chin and beneath the nose. Unlike the Gillette, I cannot get quite close enough to the underneath of my nostrils.
Despite this, it looks damned sexy on my shelf in the bathroom cabinet.
I don't know about you, however, but personally I don't care what the razor looks like, I just worry about what it feels like and whether or not it shaves well. And this thing doesn't.
Wilkinson Sword promotes the Quattro as the World's First 4-Blade System Razor. Well it probably is, and they've gone on to follow it up with a plethora of other Quattro products, including one with titanium blades. Sounds cool. They also say the ultra sharp blades will give you a really close shave. Sounds just as good. For good measure, they've slapped a strip of aloe vera above the blades and one of Vitamin E below the blades to lubricate and sooth your skin during and beyond the shaving process. Perpendicular to the blades, Wilkinson Sword has added micro-thin wire from the Protector range of razors to guard your skin from accidental cuts.
The package looks and sounds great, but when it comes to shaving it's a real disappointment. I've tried the razor with a variety of shaving foams and gels, including the manufacturer's recommended product, but despite this the razor still scrapes across my skin like sandpaper over wood. After every shave my skin feels raw and coarse and any suggestion of applying after-shave is swiftly met with retaliation from my nervous system.
Glancing at my face post-shave is equally disappointing. I can frequently see tufts of unshaven stubble, especially around my chin where the flexible razor head is supposed to be able to move to follow the contours of my face, and small nicks and spots of blood appear frequently at the point where my chin meets my neck. Running my hand over my face results in a feeling of still being slightly unshaven and a grumble from my wife by lunchtime that I obviously didn't shave this morning.
No, dear, you just bought a rubbish razor.
Unlike Gillette, if you even contemplate shaving against the grain (which their competitive product does very well if you're after a supremely close shave) the Quattro will simply grab you by the throat and threaten to kill you.
Equally, the life of the Quattro's blades versus that of its competitors is woefully short. The more frequently you shave the more frequently you should change your blade, but the de facto rule is that you should change your razor blade at least once every seven days. I shave twice a day - not because I am some stubble-wielding psychopath but because I work long hours with the public in smoky environments and therefore shower, shave and change my clothes at least twice each day - and with the Mach 3 razor could still get away with leaving a blade seven days between replacement. With the Quattro I'm lucky to get three or four days out of one blade. If I thought my face was bristly on day one of a blade's life, it is simply rough after four days of usage, not to mention the fact that the Vitamin E strip is likely to have fallen away from the blade and the aloe vera feels like it has mutated in to poison ivy.
This is not a particularly economical way to run your bathroom cabinet, but at least it means I have shortened the time between Quattro usage and returning to my beloved Gillette.
The Wilkinson Sword Quattro is not, therefore, the super razor that its manufacturer cracks it up to be. Personally, I'd rather chuck it in the bin and use my wife's epilator instead. It is truly Satan's own razor and, to top it off, it's ruined my sex life, too.
Suggestions of putting my Quattro'd face anywhere near my wife's matchbox bikini line are quickly met with panic because I'm afraid that if the two areas were to come in to close contact the friction would cause them to ignite and my face would spontaneously combust.
Advantages: Looks good on the bathroom shelf Disadvantages: Only looks good on the bathroom shelf.
...in Safeways I bought the Wilkinson Sword Quattro. It cost £4.49 (as opposed to ten Bics for 99p), but looked great in its shiney plastic packaging with its fancy holder and one extra "free" blade unit!
So it sat in my bathroom until a couple of days into the holiday and the stubble had got on her nerves sufficiently for me to unclip the Quattro from its docking station and enjoy the ultimate shaving experience as portrayed on the TV adverts.
It ... ...not so much about the Wilkinson Sword Quattro - but more an admission of how I was taken in by the Ad men.
Did I take it back? Not on your life...it is such a fine looking piece of engineering that I quite like to look at it on the shelf when I'm using my Bic.
UPDATE
So there I was in Safeways yesterday and guess what? - The Quattro is now a stonking £5.99 and the 10 pack of Bics is 79p. Things are certainly going the right way for me! ...

...reviewing, as there is a Wilkinson Sword Quattro for women razor which you have to buy blades for, and then there are the Quattro for Women disposables, and those are the ones that I will be writing about.

The razors come in a pack of four and the pack is really easy to open - just remove the cardboard at the back. I mention this because often when they come in those plastic packs you have to cut open with scissors I end up slicing through my hand!
The razors themselves are actually quite nice looking for disposables. They have pink handles which are shaped for comfort and the ...

The blades look as compact as any other, you really have to look close to see the four blades as they are so close together, and they are protected by a thin wire guard. Advantages: Very comfortable shave Disadvantages: As always on a new razor product - very pricey replacement blades
I received the Wilkinson Sword Quattro wet shaver for fathers day from my wife and son (very thoughtful of them, eh?) even though I was perfectly happy with my triple blade effort from same.
A friend recommended the Quattro some months earlier, so using it was a must to see if it really did shave as close as he had suggested.
My friends face always did look clean and smooth, but that's enough about that .... what was the Wilkinson Sword newbie ... ...expensive to buy the new Wilkinson Sword Quattro.... That is until you want replacement blades. I haven't seen these cheaper than £5.49 for four yet, so I'm glad that the blades I've got seem to be lasting so long.
Next father's day there may well be a five blade razor available ... I wonder if I'll get it? ...

Keep trim this summer. Have you mown your lawn?!! This is the phrase they use on their website www.wilkinsonsword.co.uk and I love it, I think it's quite funny!
When it comes to my bikini line I am a bit of a wimp, I do not like getting it waxed as it hurts and who wants to go through that pain. However, I do need to look good in my bikini so what to do? The WilkinsonSwordQuattro for Women bikini is a godsend as it's a handy little product that does the job its intended to do.
The razor is described as a razor to shave, trim and transform, for easy even trimming and long lasting smooth skin for all your curves, in just one razor! The razor looks like any other normal razor. At one end is a normal razor head which you use for your legs underarms and anywhere else you wish to shave. It has a pivot head so it does shave your legs ...
Advantages: No cuts, no irritation, long lasting blades and no pulsating Disadvantages: Why did they not make these sooner?
I bet by the title you thought that this was a review on the Gillette series right? Well no - I have discovered the BEST razor ever.
The WilkinsonSwordQuattro titanium and it now comes with the vibrating unit for a closer (supposedly) shave.
I used to be a Gillette mach 3 man. The three blades were brilliant. You take one swipe and it takes 3. I also found that if you are heavy handed (and admit it people we all get it sometimes - the morning after a heavy night, when you're running late etc. Or as I always found, when the last thing I needed was blood spots all over my face!) the razor would cut 3 times and usually along the whole length of the blade. Dried up blood (after 3 hours to actually scab up) is not a pretty look.
It was then I found the WilkinsonSwordQuattro. I admit it - I was sceptical since I was bad enough ...
Advantages: Very effective bikini line trimmer, and close shaving performance Disadvantages: Expensive, and less than effective shower hanger. Stupid operating instructions
Until recently, I have been a razor agnostic. I was a semi-occasional leg shaver (in the winter at least) and only dealt with the bikini line when I knew I?d be wearing a bathing suit (but NOT a bikini). I never saw the point of ?ladies? razors,? thinking they were simply a marketing ploy to convince women to pay more for a pink razor.
I have recently reformed, however. I am now far more meticulous about removing the body hair society tells us is unattractive on a woman (though I still don?t go in for the more?erm?extreme removal styles ?down there?). Having spent a few months ?borrowing? my daughter?s razors (shhh?don?t tell her), I have finally been converted to the WilkinsonSwordQuattro for Women Bikini razor.
All razors are not created alike. The Quattro is a non-disposal razor ? the type you buy heads for, rather than ...
