After using Yahoo Messenger and MSN quite a while ago, when i received my new lap top from work, I thought that I might as well download it as everyone is using it and at that particular time I wasn't.
Windows Messenger is basically MSN Messenger and if you do a search on google or any other main serach engine you can find the the link to download it.
Downloading takes seconds if you are on Broadband however if you are still not technologically advanced and still on dial up i can take hours and more than likely crashed half way though so can take days to actually install.
To have the Instant Messaging account you need to have an email address created that people can add to their individual accounts, without an email address you can't actually use it.
Once installed setting uo of friends is really easy, just click on add friend, enter their email address and that will instantly send the a message saying that they have added your email address and do you allow this person to contact you.
Once online and having an address book set up, you are able to view who is actually online at that particular time, including their status as sometimes you may be online however you may be on the phone, out at lunch or just away from your machine... so thia gives you the option to remain online and still receive messages. You can also be offline and still communicate, however you will be visible to the person that you are taking to.
Conversation can be one on one or you can invite friends to join in the conversation, however this seems to slow things down and majority of the time i just have one on one conversations anyway.
There are many other features that you can use, if you have webcam, you can view each other on line as you chat, emotions can be downloaded if you want to use these as shortcuts.. i find them annoying to be honest. People can also listen to the music that you are listening to whilst online.
Its easily to send files instantly as opposed to just email them and alos for security purposes you can create shared folder so when the person you want to send a file to online isn't actually online, a shared folder can be created and they can retrieve anything that you have put in there for just them to see.
Downsides to Messenger is it is addictive.. well to me it is.... i lose track of time and find myself chatting away until the early, however it is free so no huge phone bill.
An excellent costs effective method of keeping in touch with friends and aquaintances.

My kids are going to have massive bags under their eyes when they're older due to this lol. I can see how it can become adictive though. Nic x

Everyone's at it - Microsoft (of course, and what about NetMeeting?), Yahoo, even Google has their own chat system, either available as a downloadable client like MSN Messenger or Yahoo IM, or built-in when you sign-on to your googlemail account... Nice review, and yes, instant messaging does go a long way to breaking down barriers, despite its intrusiveness at times!
Advantages: Free, can talk to all your old MSN contacts, looks very stylish Disadvantages: Now looks out of place with other Windows schemes, has a lot of ads and extra features that cost you
