Windows XP for Dummiesdoes a good job in its role as the flagship of the Dummies line, ... more
providing Windows novices with a guided introduction to Microsoft's latest and most feature-rich operating system for everyday computer users. Its treatment of computer, Windows and Internet fundamentals is among the best on the market, and author Andy Rathbone has an appealing way of writing that's simultaneously fun and detail-rich. If you're a Windows novice--meaning you don't know how to undelete a file that's been sent to the Recycle Bin, or what a Web browser is, or what it means to "cut and paste" text--you will get a lot out of Rathbone's work. Some aspects of this book could be better, such as the part of the networking chapter that calls for an Ethernet hub without noting that a switch, though possibly more expensive, would do the job better, without any additional hassle. The networking coverage also does an inadequate job of explaining how to share a cable modem or DSL connection among several computers. This is a serious shortcoming, and we're getting to the point in our evolution as a society of computer users at which we can assume that everyone knows what the "Cancel" button does and would rather read about the newer, more exciting things that Windows XP can do. Even the dummies aren'tthatdumb anymore. But, that said--and Rathbone does confine a lot of the really elementary stuff to a skinny introductory chapter--this book is a boon to people who aren't familiar with Windows XP or its immediate predecessors (including Windows 95, Windows98, and Windows Me). It's also great for people who have learned a little about Windows on the job or from their kids, and want to expand on what they know.--David WallTopics covered:Microsoft Windows XP for people completely unfamiliar with the operating system and other recent versions of Windows. Coverage includes how to run programs, move and delete files, connecting to the Internet and using applications like electronic mail programs, Web browsers and multimedia players.

Advantages: Tried + tested Disadvantages: Windows Vista soon?
Lets face it - 90% of PC users use a Microsoft OS (operating system). The vast majority of those will be using XP. So you're not exactly going to be alone if you do decide to buy this.
So, is it a good idea to go with the masses? Yes. Unless you are really techy and know software and hardware as if it were your job. Then you might plump for Linux or something similar.
XP was released ages ago - about 2000 if memory serves correctly. As someone who started out on DOS, moved to windows 3.x, then Windows 98 and then XP (via Millenium for about 1 month ;) ) then I've had a history with OS's. XP is by far the most reliable - providing you do things properly then there is generally no problem.
If you are completely just after something that you are not going to fiddle with then - no problems. If you are likely to uninstall ...
Advantages: Many features, reliable, OEM version is priced well. Disadvantages: Vista is out, DX10 not supported (not currently an issue)
with a very nice wallpaper with green rolling hills and blue sky, which is appropriately called Bliss. Windows now animate a lot better popping up when you click on them and the start menu slickly slides open when pressed. These neat little effects can take their toll on slower hardware so you will be pleased to know you can switch them off, and for a classic professional (boring!) look you can switch to Windows Classic which is reminiscent of Windows 2000.
Using XP
Using XP is a pleasure over previous versions of Windows; it is so much more helpful and intuitive. For a start the Start menu has been given a makeover when clicked you will see your default web browser and E mail client, your recently used applications and there is a handy button to click which will show you all your programs. On the other side you have quick links to your ...
Advantages: Easy to use, Main operating system, Great help available Disadvantages: Prone to viruses, still some bugs
WindowsXP, my one and only ever operating system! I have tried Mac and tried Vista on other computers, and i don't think they compare to XP! Vista is trying to be an Apple product, and i don't think you can enjoy a mac after years of Microsoft!!! I love all the hidden features of it and trying to figure stuff out with it! Admittedly its a very dated OS nowadays but millions of computers still use it! It's a powerful operating system and it's good at what it does! Fair enough there are bugs in it still that need to be eliminated, and it is prone to viruses unlike an Apple Macintosh but i think what XP needs more than anything is a second release, exactly how it is but with all the bugs eliminated! XP2 =] Because no amount of Special Packet updates can fix an operating system! It needs to be independently and professionally improved ...
