NEVER PLAY POKER WITH A MAN CALLED AMARILLO SLIM!

Advantages: Punchy incisive information, no poker babble, humourous in places
Disadvantages: None of note!

I was always under the seemingly misguided impression I was an ok poker player. Sure I've never played for money and I often left the games I played with far less plastic tokens than I started with but I saw the games I took part in more as a social event and the opportunity to hone my skill than a win at all costs exercise. So I was a touch surprised and ever so slightly insulted when one of the wags I usually play poker with bought me a 'Poker for Dummies' book as a Christmas present - it's not as if he's any great shakes with a pack of cards himself! Nevertheless, after getting over the initial exasperation I realised I had in this particular 'For Dummies' book a rather handy and helpful guide, and far from slighting my poker talent my joking friend had inadvertently supplied me with a guide full of helpful tips, witty anecdotes ...

Poker for Non-Deaf Dummies

Advantages: Teaches poker for beginners
Disadvantages: Can be confusing at first and got no subtitles

Bought this for a friend of mine, who is deaf like myself and we both were annoyed to find it does not have subtitles, therefore making it useless for him. Althought another friend, who is hearing, borrowed the DVD and said to have found it useful after watching it several times with practice. Covers pretty much everything you can expect with poker games, even tips to recoignise if the players are bluffing. It has to be pointed out that the presentation of the teaching is quite clear and organised, in total of 8 chapters - with the first for introduction. There is also a chapter dedicated to the game of Texas Hold 'Em to details, the most popular variation of poker. Recommended buying for non-deaf beginners, obviously ! :) Rated only average due to the lack of subtitles ...

Review of Poker For Dummies (DVD)

The Dummy

Advantages: Funny acting
Disadvantages: poor death scenes

When a film is written, produced, directed and starred in by one man, you get an idea that it may be a low budget smalltime movie. And in this case you would be right for assuming. However, there are many films that ar far from Hollywood blockbusters and yet still hold your attention throughout. The Dummy sits on the line for this one with a mix of funny and entertaining scenes as well as some pretty poorly acted ones. The acting quality ranges drastically throughout and features some actors who seem as if they might get somewhere half decent and others that seem to just be friends of the the director. The story is simpl and has been heard before in lots of films ecpecially budget ones. A guy's dummy starts to kill people. That's it. Not much else happens. You find out the doll was carved from voodoo relics but there is no more ...
