With peace reigning in the Magic Kingdom at last, Ben Holiday was finally free to lie back and watch his daughter grow. Which she did - by leaps and bounds. Born a seedling and...
more...nourished by soil from Landover, Earth and the fairy mists, Mistaya was a unique child, as dazzling as her mother, the sylph Willow, and fiery and impatient with those who couldn't keep up with her lightning- fast development. But Ben's idyll was not to last. The dark and pitiless Rydall, king of lands beyond the fairy mists, was at the gates of Sterling Silver. His armies ready to invade if Ben would not accept his challenge: to face and defeat seven different champions of Rydall's choice. And accept he must, for Mistaya had been snatched from her guardians by foul magic and only Rydall had the key to her fate ...

I thoroughly enjoyed this book, was ages ago that I read it but can still remember it, as with all the Landover series.

This is the sixth book in the Landover series, and by the look of it the last.

The hero is Ben Holiday, a man from our world who saw an advert in a christmas catalogue that had been to interesting to pass up, the chance to be King of a land where childhood stories are real. Being unhappy with his mundane life he went for it and found himself in Landover. From the start he had to cope various hardships and of course disbelief that he was actually there. He has an adviser called Abanathy, who was accidently turned into a dog by another adviser, a wizard called Questor Thews. These two are constantly bickering which makes for funny reading.

By the time this story happens Ben thinks that he has finally found peace in Landover as all conflicts are over and he is happy to sit back and watch his daughter, Mistaya, grow from a seedling. Her mother is a tree sylph called Willow, and Mistaya takes after her magical side. All goes well until Rydall, the king from lands beyond Landover decides to take over. Armies are poised on the borders and if Ben didn't accept Rydalls seven challenges they would invade. Many tell Ben not to worry about it and decline to accept, but when Mistaya is taken by Rydalls forces he has to do something. So armed only with his ater-ego, a paladin that is summoned through a pendant, and which Ben was finding harder to leave behind after summoning, he accepts the challenge. Both Questor Thews and Abernathy disappear, leaving Ben and Willow to face the first challenge alone. The first challenge arrives in the form of a giant, over eight foot tall and armed with wooden club. The giant looks like no match for the paladin... but looks are decieving.

I won't tell more as I don't want to spoil anything.

To show the impact this book and the rest of the series had on me, I will let you into a useless piece of info.. I named my cat Meeks after a wizard in Landover.
