"A cop, a murder and the Amish"

The Amish community has a different way of life to modern society and some people may find it difficult to adapt to their beliefs. In the 1985 film, Witness, a detective must go into hiding with the Amish when an Amish boy is witness to a murder.

Witness is about a detective, John Book, who tries to protect a young Amish boy, Samuel Lapp, after he witnesses a murder in Philadelphia, during a visit with his his mother Rachel. After Samuel identifies a narcotics officer, James McFee, as the murderer and Book is attacked and realises that his superior officer, Chief Paul Schaeffer, is corrupt and working with McFee, forcing Book to go onto hiding at the Lapp farm in order to protect Samuel and his mother. Book must try to adapt to the Amish way of life and deal with is feeling for Rachel, in a community with conservative beliefs, especially as his presence causes friction. McFee and his associates are still on their trail and Book must do all he can to save Samuel and Rachel.

This is a brilliant thriller which I thought was enjoyable as a detective tries to adapt to the Amish way of life. It is an exciting film that has drama, tension and a great love story. There are some great action scenes as well as some interesting scenes in the Amish community as Book learns more about the Amish people. The two lead characters of Book and Rachel work well together as they face opposition from those around them. It is a fascinating story about love and murder set in the Amish community.

Harrison Ford is excellent as the detective John Book, who is thrust into a society that he has no experience of in order to protect a young Amish boy Samuel. Kelly McGillis is equally good as Rachel, the mother of Samuel, who falls in love with Book. A young Lukas Haas is good as Samuel who is hunted by killers. The film also features Danny Glover, Josef Sommer, Jan Rubes and Alexander Godunov.

I really enjoyed this Peter Weir film which features murder and a clash of societies in theAmish community. I recommend this film to everyone.
