Advantages: An incredibly powerful programme, your standard doesnt matter. Disadvantages: None chess fans wont appreciate it as much
I was firstly interested in trying out Fritz Chess when I read about how Fritz 8 had drew 4 - 4 with International master Vladimir Kramnik. Being an avid chess fan myself (I was once involved in the international setup in my youth) I decided that this programme was the one for me. I had previousley owned a couple of games from the Chessmaster series, but decided a change was in order.
When I installed the game (which was done very quickly) I was instantly impressed. It had a very simple interface which was easy to navigate and select my game mode. After around an hour of fiddling around and exploring the programme I sat back and thought wow, just wow. The game had totally blown me away. It had everything that a chess game should have, it could cater for total novices, strong county players and the best of the best. Ever fancied ...
Advantages: Complex and fun Disadvantages: Hard to learn
, but it is worth it!
Chess sets are relatively cheap - I know you can get dead expensive hand crafted one, but they can be around £5-£10, with Draughts thrown in. You can join a chess club too - there are loads. Handheld computer games are available - but hard to understand and expensive. And you can get computer games for your PC or Mac. The best thing is to have a friend who plays - because its a lot easier to learn by watching them and asking questions.
Its a very good game once you get into it - and two players of a similar standard can play for hours. I haven't played in a while - but I feel like it now! ...

Advantages: More than just a normal chess game Disadvantages: Doesn't appeal to convential chess fans
Combat Chess
I bought this game a few years ago - when I was a chess player and a County Team Champion - but to be honest I wasn't impressed by this game.
The name of the game indicates that this isn't quite a normal game of chess - there are in fact two modes. You can have the convential chess, or you can have the chess with monstrous and magical creatures.
You may gasp when you hear this game is a certification 15!! Well it is.
The info begins "No matter how good you are at chess, you'll have to be a whole lot better when the black knight's turning your pawns to green jelly, and the queen's threatening to deliver a majestic head-butt to your king... Suddenly, with the click of a mouse you're locked into a fight between good and evil, where losing just isn't an option." Ooh, how scary (!).
Graphics on the game are good ...
