six thousand years ago, Michelle Paver has fashioned a remarkable debut novel for children. Wolf Brother, the first instalment of her six-book Chronicles of Ancient Darkness sequence, takes its readers back in time to an atmospheric world of snow, hunter-gatherers, tribes, clans, mountains, forests, bears and unearthly superstitions. For humans then, life was hard and Pavers narrative taps wonderfully into all the sensations they must have experienced living amidst such an unforgiving landscape. The book begins dramatically with the death of Toraks father, the mage, Fa, from mortal wounds inflicted by a giant, possessed bear. Fas dying words bind Torak to a quest to find the mythical Mountain of the World Spirit. Only there will Torak find the strength needed to defeat the demonic creature and killer of men. Having lived apart from other Clans, and burdened by such an impossible task, Torak is bereft by the death of his only companion in life and struggles to survive in the harsh conditions he now finds himself in. Then, instead of killing an orphaned wolf cub for food, Torak spares the tiny animal and together they travel north. Torak gains a further companion for his arduous journey in the form of Renn, a headstrong and feisty girl of his own age whose Clan Torak inadvertently has an altercation with. Renn believes Torak to be The Listener--a prophesised being who will save the world--and together they escape from danger into a different sort of peril. Pavers novel is strong on detail and the authenticity of her settings is breathtaking. She cleverly weaves a fantastical, but believable, layer onto her narrative that enriches her story and makes it all the more readable. (Age 10 and over) --John McLay

When I first got this book I recieved it as a present at christmas and thought that it wasn't really my type of book, but I thought I would give it a go. I was totally hooked from the very first page. The intricate plot, containing great friendship and loyalty, as well as fearful suspense and terrible danger.
Set thousands of years ago, in the great forests that covered much of the world, Wolf Brother tells the story of Torak, a young hunter who lives in peae with his father. Until one day his idyllic life is torn apart by a monstrous bear, whose attack leaves his father dying. On his death bed, Torak's father tells him the horrifying truth about the bear that even as they speak is still haunting the dark shadows around them. The bear is possessed by a demon, and this demon-bear will continue to grow in power as it kills until the entire forest is brought to destruction. When the bear returns to finish what it had started, Torak is forced to abandon his fathers corpse and set out on a quest to the great mountain ranges, home of the world spirit, the only thing which can possably hope to stop the bear. Shortly after fleeing, Torak encounters Wolf, a young wolf cub who's family lie dead, drowned by a flash flood. Yet wolf is not all that he seems, and he joins Torak as his guide to the great mountains. Along the way Torak encounters the many creatures and clans that inhabit the woods, and discoveres that there is more to the world than he could possibly have imagined during his secluded life with his father. But the threat of the bear is ever present, and the quest becomes more and more urgent with each passing day as the bear's power grows. Will Torak and wolf make it in time to save all life in the forest from certain death. And why did Torak's fathere keep him secluded away from the clans for so long. Te epic beginning to a fantastic tale, this book is a must read for fans of fantasy worldwide. It combines the real world of thousands of years ago with the world of demons and magic, with the end result a beautifully compelling story that has all of the componants of a classic.
Advantages: great for all ages to read Disadvantages: possibly slow to start
I picked this book up at a train station when it first came out. It was a gift for my Girlfriend, I had never heard of it before and got it for her to read on the plain on her way to china.
2 years later I picked it up again on her recommendation and didnt put it down again until I had finished reading it.
This story is the first in a series called "The Chronicles Of Ancient Darkenss" and follows the adventures of a young boy orfan in the forrests ... ...brings to life a world long forgotten and a way of life for the hunter gather tribes of the time that compels me to go and live in the woods for a while just to see how I would get on.
I think this story could take over from the likes of Tolkein and Rowling to become one of the best adventures for both children and adults.
I hope they make it into a film but I hope they do it well. ...
