...been the case with the Wolfenstein series, realism and originality go out the window and in come big guns, plenty of splatter and lots and lots of Nazis.
There's a couple of concessions to 21st Century gaming (not least the ability to switch to a spooky supernatural realm called The Veil, where you can effect changes in the real world), but mostly it's predict-o-gaming ported in from the early '90s, only with a hardware upgrade. Despite kickstarting the first-person shooter genre in 1992, this next-gen reboot of Wolfenstein 3D has received a surprisingly lukewarm reception from most quarters. While the first game made headlines with its revolutionary 3D blasting, Swatstika-decorated walls, exploding Nazis and, most memorably of all, an actual RoboHitler, Wolfenstein 2009 has been criticised for its lack of innovation and formulaic approach. You can understand why: in 1992, it was the first of its kind; in 2009, it's coming into a market that has deliver some of the best shooters in history - the likes of Halo ODST and Modern Warefare 2, not to mention the upcoming Bioshock 2. So, question is, is it formulaic and lacking innovation? In my opinion, yes. But, playing it, you feel as if it's making no apologies for the fact. Taking on the role of series protagonist BJ Blazkowicz you're tasked with stopping Himmler and his Third Reich black-magic dabblers from harnessing the power of an ancient power sauce. It's hokey old nonsense that makes not a scrap of difference to the way the game plays...As has often been the case with the Wolfenstein series, realism and originality go out the window and in come big guns, plenty of splatter and lots and lots of Nazis.
