Yamaha YCL-250S Clarinet
Review of Yamaha Clarinet by tomt89

Advantages: Durable, responsive, affordable, good tone quality.
Disadvantages: Screws can work loose on a regular basis.

The YCL-250S is a superb model that provides excellent tone quality and is easy to play. With an ABS body, the 250 is durable (making it very suitable for beginners and younger children who may not have the knowledge to care for a wooden instrument). The plastic construction is also useful for those who do not want or do not have the time to spend on care of a wooden instrument. The ABS body comes with a wood-effect satin finish. I am taking my ...
...this model as it a very responsive instrument which complements my style of playing. With a suggested selling price of £419, it is well within the reach of those buying their first instrument, either for themselves of a child. This model is also a good alternative to the expensive wooden models for those who only play as a hobby and have not got the money to use. One problem I have encountered is that a couple of the screws work themselves loose ... Read review

Buffet RC prestige Clarinet
Review of Buffet RC Prestige Bb Clarinet by musicdave

Advantages: Great Quality and Sound
Disadvantages: A bit expensive

...school i asked for a buffet B12 clarinet for christmas. I kept this clarinet until the last year of my A levels but my clarinet teacher advised me that i needed a new one to progress further. Because of this i then started to try many different clarinets. I tried nearly every model and every make and narrowed it down to a Buffet RC and a Buffet R13. The reason i chose an RC prestige was because of the dark mellow german tone compared to the R13 prestige ...
...the pupils to go for Buffet as they make outstanding clarinet. Even the most basic models are well built and sound good. The one thing i would say is that if you try an RC prestige, do not expect to make a nice sound out of it straight away. The whole way of playing what is classed as a professional instrument compared to a lower model such as an E model or a B model is completely different. Because of this many people are put off but if you do persist ... Read review

Moeck wooden recorders
Review of Moeck Recorder by Elfinn

Advantages: Beautiful smoothed wood, holes are well positioned, sound quality is amazing, a joy to play.
Disadvantages: Higher register difficult to get used to at first, expensive, require a lot of looking after, may sound sharp or out of tune if played within a group of plastic recorders

...I have a Moeck descant recorder, it's made from Ebony wood. As soon as I layed my fingers over the holes and placed the mouthpiece onto my lower lip, I knew that this was a beautiful recorder. I played the note G, to A then B, and just from those 3 notes it sounded fantastic. The tone is supple, it varies from a soft, warm sound to bright and clear, whatever register you are in. I must admit, the higher register takes some getting used to, it requires ...
...an extreme difference between a Moeck and other wooden recorders. Moeck wooden recorders are made with love, you can see and hear that as soon as you play one. Of course, they can be expensive, but when you play it you'll feel instantly that your money was NOT wasted. The holes are positioned comfortably, and the shape of the mouthpiece is rounded and smooth so it makes playing a pleasure. You have to look after these recorders with care though. ... Read review

One of the best beginner models on the market
Review of Yamaha 211 Silver-plated by PhilThePenguin

Advantages: Excellent build quality and intonation
Disadvantages: The usual limitations of a beginner instrument

...played both, I'd say the Yamaha is very much worth the extra. The build quality is simply what you'd expect from such a respected make, and that makes all the difference to the tone and tuning as well as the robustness and mechanical reliability of the flute. While not a professional instrument by any means, a beginner should be able to pass several Grades before this flute begins to be the limiting factor in tone production, and the tuning is reasonable ...
...kept to a minimum and with the occasional service the flute will last many years even in the hands of a complete novice. Obviously as with any silver or silver-plated instrument regular cleaning is necessary to prevent tarnishing, but most music shops will bundle a cleaning cloth with an instrument bought new. In all a highly-recommended flute for beginners but beyond Grade 6 or 7, start to think about an upgrade. ... Read review
