My town used to be very lucky some years ago in that it boasted the second largest Woolworths in the UK, 3 majestic red and gold floors encompassing a wonderful cheap and cheerful restaurant on the top floor and a huge grocery department on the bottom floor. The middle floor was the main shopping area offering a wide range of products and a variety of departments. How we loved it, we'd ride up and down on the escalators (which were a new novelty back then!!) between floors and you could happily spend an hour or so discovering new treasures at sometimes unbelievable prices.
Things have changed now, the town centre has been completely revamped to include a brand new shopping centre and an all singing all dancing modern new Woolworths sat right in the heart of it. Sadly, the modern cheerful look of the store fails to live up to that image when you finally step inside. The store is still a good size, but is so disorganized that you find yourself fighting with other customers to reach products, or falling over 'mini displays' which have been placed in the middle of and at the ends of aisles, as quite simply, the floor space just isn't big enough to house the huge array of stock that Woolworths are trying to sell you!
It has a number of 'departments', the usual ones you'd expect but space is so limited that items are crammed in together and I feel a sense of claustrophobia the minute I walk in through the doors. The audio and video department is the best in our local store, it stocks just about every CD, video film and latest DVD at competitive prices and is set out quite well. The staff here are friendly and helpful, and nothing seems to be too much trouble for them.
The kids clothing department is very crowded, very cluttered and always looks untidy. There used to be a time when parents loved the Woolworth's Ladybird range of kids clothing as good quality, affordable and hardwearing, but now it just seems a little dated and jaded. However, Woolworths does boast a very large confectionery department, here you'll find an array of Pic N Mix sweeties to choose from, lots of chocolates and snacks and is a great place to find all your Christmas yummies at reasonable prices. And it's one saving grace, as far as I'm concerned, is that it sells Galaxy chocolate by the yard.....oboy yum!
The toys department is very well stocked too, but again, just too cluttered to make shopping here enjoyable. But the range of ‘crafty’ and activity type toys/sets is second to none and most are very affordable.
The kitchen and bathroom departments offer a few nice bits and pieces but often in very gharish colours and some very unusual styles, but again, the prices are very affordable if you can find something to your taste!
The checkouts can be a rather scary experience for me in my local store, they’re housed in two main clusters at either side of the shop and two of the cashiers there are the meanest looking and most vocal cashiers I have ever come across! They have an unnerving habit of studying each of your purchases with great interest and commenting very loudly on your choices...'oh, you're buying that huge 3kg bar of Galaxy are you? My, you will get fat!'....or, 'Size 16 knickers love? Bet that diet will be starting soon, eh?' I know they're probably just trying to be friendly but by this time, I'm normally so hot and bothered from forcing my way through the cluttered aisles, wrestling with old ladies over the last box of discounted Milk Tray and removing the umbrella belonging to the man stood behind me from my backside that I just want to get out of there as quickly as possible!
I'm sure there are many branches of Woolworths around the country that are delightful, spacious and offer a wonderful shopping experience, in fact, I know there are because I've visited many. But I think the main problem with my local branch is that they are just trying to stock too many items into too small a space. But overall, the prices are good and the staff generally always have a smile for you...even when they are being vocal on your choice of items! :O)
Advantages: None Disadvantages: Pay in advance for something that appears on the shelves which you cannot have.
...to go into your local Woolworths and reserve something to later pick up.
Our local Woolworths has just swapped stores with Marks and Spencers and finally the toys are on the lower level, I have never understood why the toys are upstairs when a lot of parents have young children and pushchairs etc, we have left the pushchair stage behind (thank goodness) but it is still better to have the toys on the ground floor, anyway back to what I am supposed ... ...first on the list was Woolworths for the Domino Express sky rider, typical it had been sitting on the shelf for weeks with its friends, when we want to buy it, it has disappeared, they spent the rest of their money and kept £15.00 back for this particular toy.
We went back to Woolwoorths the following weekend and it still had an empty space where the Domino Express should be, I went and asked about it at the till, and they ordered it for my son, ...

Advantages: A trustworthy shop. A good range. Disadvantages: A bit, well, dull. Your mother shops there.
Woolworths is the bastion of high street British shopping. This year, though, they have raised a few eyebrows by keeping three stores open on Christmas day. Spare a thought for those people who ended up working on the 25th if they had had other plans. I can only hope that the Christmas bonus was huge for them.
Woolworths is a shop that successfully caters to a wide market. I remember, as a kid, buying tape albums from the current top twenty. In ... ...to buy in your local Woolworths depends greatly on the size of your store. If you are lucky enough to live close to a large one then you’ll be able to go there to pick up everything from clothes to garden chairs. If you’re feeling particularly mean you could grab a garden gnome and give it to a “friend” for Christmas. If you are feeling particularly nice you can stray off to the pic’n’mix section and not hog the entire bag to yourself.
I can’t, ...

Advantages: Cheap, wide range of stuff, interesting Disadvantages: "This product is temporarily unavailable"
Woolworths is a strange store, really, but that's probably all to the good now all high streets seem to consist of the same bland uniform stores. Woolworths really have to sell the oddest selection of products- where else can you buy assorted hammers and nails, CDs and DVDs, pic n mix sweets, mops and buckets, toys, kids clothes, mobile phones, computer games and shower gels and shampoos, all in the same store?
It certainly makes Woolworths a great ... ...if you still have a Woolworths there then you can still get at least a limited range of the products they used to sell- for example my local high street lost its small Our Price branch, so now only Woolworths have a reasonable selection of CDs.
The downside to all this is that even with a larger store, Woolworths selection in each of its' little departments is pretty limited. Woolworths also seem to make this problem a million times worse that it ...

Do you know, they even have them in Majorca. A few years ago, I was holidaying in Majorca, and there in the middle of Palma, was a Woolies. Home from home. It is a joke in our family that no matter where we go on holiday or a day trip, we just have to go to Woolies.
They sell everything. It does depend on the size of your store, as they do vary greatly.
As well as all the sweets, music, toiletries, toys etc that they sell, their children's clothes ... ...many sales.
I enjoy looking in their kitchen department section and can pick up really useful bits and pieces at low prices.
I use their cafe when shopping in town with my son as they provide an area with a few kiddy rides and games and a colouring area. They also give a free gift with their kiddies meal which is often a nice book or a craft kit. The dinosaurs were a particular favourite of my sons.
I think the cost of the adult meals are a bit ...

Advantages: good-looking glass pot Disadvantages: according to the producer not to be used *on* the stove
at the writing on the cardboard protecting pot and lid, I was told in 14 languages ?Do not use on a kitchen stove.? My back bottom! Why hadn?t I read this already in the shop? I don?t want to use the glass pot *in* the stove, but *on* it, on open gas flames.
The following day I went to a shop specialised in kitchen utensils, much more expensive than Woolworth but with shop-assistants that know their jobs. (The shop-assistants at Woolworth?s - in case you find any - know nothing). I learnt that one should never use a glass pot on a stove, when I said that I had done so with my old one all the time, the shop-assistant looked at me as if I was suicidal. ?Of course, you can do what you like, but it?s your own responsibility.? ?I?ll take it upon me?, I answered bravely. I?m sure that my old glass pot hadn?t cracked because of its exposure to open gas ...
