World Championship Snooker 2004 (wcs4) is the latest instalment of Codemasters snooker series. This time around Codemasters has included extra tournaments enhanced multiplayer some new real world players and improved commentary.
If you’re interested in wcs4, then it’s probably safe to assume that you already have at least a little understanding of snooker. Suffice to say wcs4 includes a variety of playing modes including LG Tour (career mode) classic matches custom snooker matches eight and nine ball pool Trickshot Challenge and a range of bonus mini games.
In a game of this type, an intuitive control system is essential and wcs4 doesn’t disappoint. While I prefer the mouse driven mechanics of the old Virtual Pool series wcs4’s pop-up control menu is quite acceptable and a bit reminiscent of the swing systems used in older golfing simulations. I also love the game’s coaching tutorials and the aiming aid which shows you (before you make your shot) exactly where the cue and target balls will end up.
The visuals of the game are very crisp, and it supports high screen resolutions. All of the players, pool halls and spectators have been rendered in 3D, which is quite a nice effect, but isn’t especially wondrous. I mean, how visually exciting can a pool or snooker game actually be? On a negative note, you aren’t given much latitude with regard to customising the appearance of your onscreen character.
Wcs4 also includes a decent multiplayer component, with support for player matches over a LAN or the Internet (via GameSpy Arcade).
If you’re after a slick snooker and pool simulation, then World Championship Snooker 2004 is a great option.
Advantages: Very best graphics, good sound effects, too much players. Disadvantages: Loading takes too much time.

...it to coincide with the World Championships in April, but whatever the reason for the delay, as fans of the series and players of the game we're glad it's here again, albeit at a daft time of year. The intro to this year's game is really well done. Real and in-game footage cut together makes you realise just how good the ball physics are, and get the game off to a good start. WCS 2004 gives you 30+ real pros to play against; World Champion Ronnie ... ...make up a sizeable, 100-strong world ranking ladder. The game's main focus is the LG Tour that gives you a full season's events to play in, which form a "career" mode. Winnings can be spent on new cues, clothing, extra tables, ball sets etc. (you'll also get one-off challenges from close rivals to earn extra cash). The ultimate aim is obviously to get to the number one ranking spot and of course win the end of season finale, the World Championship ...
