Get Worms To Eat Your... |

Our local council have been doing waste awareness roadshows for a few months, where they have been offering subsidised wormeries from a company called Wormcity.
As I have a small garden I decided to try it out - we don't produce a great deal of waste (as we have 2 dogs that eat most of it) but we always have peelings etc that we usually throw away with the rubbish. We ordered the wormery from the Wormcity web site, and it was delivered the next day with a huge sticker saying "Urgent Live Worms" on it (the courier was a bit mystified at what it could be)
We decided to set it up straight away.
The kit contained
The wormery was really easy to put together, the instruction leaflet was very helpful with step by step instructions (there is also a slideshow on their website) .
Once it had been assembled and the worms placed into their new homes we had to watch out for "worm wander" apparently worms when they are in a new wormery tend to wander off at night for the first few days. This is because the wormery is a sterile environment which the worms dont like so try to leave, however once some bacteria and fungi have moved in the worms are happy to stay.We had set up the wormery in the garage so we left the light on (worms don't like light) and fortunatly when we went back the next morning none had escaped.
The instructions state that we wearn't to feed them for 2 weeks, thus allowing them to settle in, the bedding block (which we found out to be compressed coconut husk) was giving them enough food.It took a while for the food to start getting eaten, but after 3 months we added another tray on top of the one we were using (there were three trays) and then the last tray on top.
We now have worms eating our peelings and shredded paper, and with our new pets and the dogs, we don't send put waste food in our dustbin any more.
We have had some great vermicompost (worm poo) and liquid feed from the wormery already
