I was introduced to this drink by the lead singer in our band. At first, I thought what could possibly be the difference between different brands of rum, I like capt morgan (the band likes it so much they wrote a song about it), I like Pussers and I like Woods 100, they all taste about the same. I honestly couldn't tell you the difference between them, but Wray and Nephew stands out.
First of all the smell, so strong you can smell it as soon as they start pouring it on the back bar. This is probably due to 63% vol! Keep away from naked flames etc. The smell is quite important, as I'll explain later.
Now for the taste, when drank with a mixer the potency of the rum still comes through with full force. The taste is unique because about half the taste on the tongue and half from the smell, which leaves a pleasent aroma/aftertaste. When drank straight this will singe the hairs on your feet. Yes, on it's own Wray and Nephew's is very strong, very strong indeed! So strong all you can taste for an hour after is rum, even after more beer or even an airwave chewing gum.
Last but not least, the effect. After a double you start feeling the effects, warm, relaxed and the laughter starts. After 2 doubles things get interesting. The warmness soon changes to an all over glow and the relaxed feeling turns to lethargy and if you're not careful you're stuck there for the night. Anymore than 2 doubles and there's not going to be much you'll remember. We know this from experience. We found this drink a very good catalyst for good night out, a few beers, a couple of Wray and Nephew's and then back on to normal rum or beer. But as I said earlier more than 2 doubles and more drink = we never remember much after the rum.
This drink is ideal for a foundation for a night out, but it can be a monster if not respected. All thats left to say is: give it a try and be responsible.
