Advantages Advantages A release of emotions in a beautiful medium

Disadvantages Disadvantages Only if you don't think you can do it

I have written poetry for as long as I can remember, but it wasn’t until I studied poetry at university that I realised what I was writing and how I was writing it. Some people seem to have a natural talent for poetry, while others strive hard to find the right words to express a feeling. I am hoping that the advice I give in this review will help both types of poet, and those who have not yet discovered their talent. WHAT IS POETRY? Poetry is a type of creative writing which is usually rhythmical or rhyming. Poems are usually shorter than most prose and often are emotional or descriptive ... more

Advantages Advantages Help for budding poets

Disadvantages Disadvantages my own personal view

So may times, I have had comments on my poetry reviews, “ I wish I could write poetry” “I don’t think I could do that”. It saddens me that people think that poetry has to be “clever” or you have to be very creative to write a poem. People have been writing poetry since language was first invented. It’s merely another form of communication between the writer and the reader; in essence, it is words written in a different way. This topic is only my personal opinion; I have not researched the subject and have not looked at any web sites. The only quotations I will use come from an old copy of the ... more

Advantages Advantages Great to see your work in print.

Disadvantages Disadvantages Rejection letters can be painful.

Am I qualified to give advice on getting your poetry published? Well, as a poet I have had some success in getting my work published in small press poetry magazines, as well as winning a couple of runner up prizes in poetry competitions. I also run my own small press poetry magazine called The Black Rose, which gives me an insider's view on what an editor wants. Getting poetry published is not as hard as you might think, but don't expect to make lots of money out of it!! Most small press magazines don't pay, although some give out complimentary copies of the issue in which your work appears ... more

    Advantages Advantages Fun, expressive

    Disadvantages Disadvantages none

Poetry is a form of expression and most poetry is written from personal experience. It may be a mood your in, or just one verse of a feeling you are having, that you can add on to. There are many forms of poetry. If you are a natural poet you will already have your own style and if not you need to work on creating a style that is easiest for you to write in. Myself, I write many types depending on what pops into my head at the time. Lets take an example of writing from personal experience and maybe adding to it if there isn't enough length. I am not saying that poetry has to be lengthy but ... more

Poetry is the gateway to the soul, be you a writer, a housewife/husband, a child, a teacher it doesn't matter, poetry transcends all. I started writing poetry as a child, and as a child they were about childish things. I can only remember snippets of two of them; the first one I can remember went like this; Go, Go piece of snow Fall to the ground I'll be bound If you do not fall By half past two I will stick my head Down the loo! I remember sitting in my bedroom watching the snow melt on the roof of the house opposite, big sheets of the stuff were sliding off like mini avalanches, the last bit ... more
