My beloved husband had a heart attack last week. It was the scariest afternoon of my life from the moment he called me at work to say he’d had severe chest pains for over 3 hours and did I think he had swine flu, me telling him to put down the phone immediately and call an ambulance with his exact location to me getting through to the hospital over 2 hours later to find out he’d indeed had a heart attack but had been treated and was stable and in recovery.
MY THOUGHTS ON ALL THIS?
My dear heart
Please always look after you. You are so important to me, like you would not believe. The thought of you not being around forever scares me more than you can ever imagine, like dying 1000 deaths at the same time. You might have quit smoking 5 years ago but the damage was already done. You might have changed your diet several years ago to eat more sensibly but again the damage was already done. You might have been attending the gym 4 times a week for the last few years but maybe you overdid it? You always say “Health is wealth” and I know you believe that, what point are all the riches in the world if you are not healthy enough to enjoy them? You might only be 42 but you were still attacked by blockages that could have been there for years. Everyone we know who knows about this has had a sharp wake up call, knowing how fit you generally are, it has scared them no end and made them think of their own mortality So you cut down on red meat, cakes, chips, cheese, etc, and started eating more fish and vegetables, it was too little too late as they say. So you tried to lose weight and lose some you did, but it wasn’t enough. So you drink alcohol maybe 2 or 3 times a year in recent years but it wasn’t really that that contributed to the attack in your case, was it? So you had somewhat high blood pressure for the last few years and never thought it would do any harm but it did, didn’t it? Yes, you were warned you had borderline cholesterol issues and you changed your lifestyle. So you thought it wouldn’t happen to you as you’re JUST in your early 40s, but happen it did. So others might think they needn’t worry if they’re in their 30s but our close friend’s dad died when he was 36 of a heart attack and he wasn’t even ill beforehand. So we don’t want to panic other people to take more care of themselves but really we’d like them to be more aware of the damage they could be doing to themselves even in their teens, 20s, 30s, etc which could lead to something like this happening later to them. What do they say? “Prevention is better than cure” – taking steps now to live a better lifestyle could stop others becoming a victim of heart disease. These are the things we have talked about a lot since last week dear heart and we want our friends to live long and healthy lives without having to go onto several different forms of medication a day as is now the case with you. I love my heart and I love yours and I hope others love theirs enough to take more care of them and treat them like the precious things they truly are.
With love always
Your heart xxx
I hope this message to my husband’s heart doesn’t come across as preachy; I just wanted to get it off my chest and even if something in there rings true to you or someone you care about, maybe you can do a little research or make small changes to prevent things suddenly getting so serious that it means heart surgery.
My husband is home now and can't work for 3 months, can't drive for at least 4 weeks. He has been home for 3 days now and is bored of the TV/DVDs/Books already. He can't even walk for more than a few minutes without getting tired but that will be better next week and a bit better the week after.
If he was older, the recovery time would have been longer. If he was older - he was told that level of heart attack would probably have killed him.
On a cheerier note, he is an extremely positive person and that can only help in his recovery. Some sites with info which you might find useful if you have any worries about heart disease:
I am so sorry to hear about your husbands heart attack, I am so glad to hear it was stablalised quickly and he is in recovery this must be a difficult time for you... Your review definetly did make me think twice, as a smoker who is trying to quit this really made an impact..... I would hate for my actions to hurt people in my future x

Can't even begin to imaging what you and hubby have been through but at least he has come through it. Best of luck over the coming weeks, months and years.
