The real reason any player should buy the X series is not for the storyline, which is notoriously bad in pretty much all of them, its for the sheer open endedness of the game. it is as near to an offline, single player version of EVE that you can get. you can trade, build stations, fight races of creatures, pirates, alien invaders, build battle fleets, build empires, well pretty much do ANYTHING ... more

Basic story/game outline: player starts as the former pirate, who's father was searching for a way back home from the universe that he currently inhabits (think Farscape and your not too wrong), as you play along you find out more and more that leads you to why your stranded, the nature of the invading enemies, and your history.
Gameplay: The real reason any player should buy the X series is not for the storyline, which is notoriously bad in pretty much all of them, its for the sheer open endedness of the game. it is as near to an offline, single player version of EVE that you can get. you can trade, build stations, fight races of creatures, pirates, alien invaders, build battle fleets, build empires, well pretty much do ANYTHING thats in the game. it is this that will keep you hooked, and offers a great replay value, as its based in a dynamic universe, things happen slightly different each time you play. play the first time as prehaps a noble trader, and then play again as an evil pirate its pretty much as free roaming and freeform as you would want!
Sound: Sound is, well a little dodgy. the weapon effects sound brilliant, as do the ship noises, but the voice acting and some sounds are very bad, either down to being down right annoying (the verbose shipcomputer has become something of a ledgend on the Egosoft Forums) or strangely loud/quiet (flying around in space, hear the equivalent of a nuclear detonation only to see its 2 potato sized asteroids 500km away hitting into each other)
Graphics: Brilliant, its really good graphics, on par with those offered by EVE. latest gen technologys (DX9 shaders etc employed) not much more to say but in that depart ment you wont be dissapointed.
Reliabiltiy: ah, theres always a bad point somewhere, and this would be it. its simply not that good of a game reliability wise. if it runs on your computer, and a fair number of people find this hard enough, then you can often be prone to random crashes, lockups, strange errors etc. the GOD engine within the game, which controls economy and general universe events is also bugged, leading to some very boring and lifeless universes (it slowly loses all civillian traffic ,the economy falls to a standstill)
Needed specs: My god, these are high. if your not a new computer, and i MEAN new, you wont run this on highspecs. my X2 4400+ chip with 6800gt gfx card even slows down in the higher density sectors!
Overall. hopefully by christmas, a needed update which is said to address numerous problems will be released, and improve the game massively, but untill then, be weary. if you can get into the game and its unique style, theres a good chance youl love it, but theres a large chance you wont even get that far.!
Advantages: Trade or fight and all in incredible detail Disadvantages: very buggy, but patches help
This is a game that i waited a long time for. Having played X2, i was eagerly waiting for the expansion pack, but as time went by, the developers came up with a new engine and an ever expanding game, so it was goodbye expansion and hello whole new game.
Before you buy this, take note. If you do not have a powerful system with a modern graphics card, then this game may not even load. I know, itried it in an older system and it wouldn't even start, ... ...it into my main system with a geforce 6 graphics card loaded with 256MB of memory and it played fine, although it can get a little slow at times if you have too many things going on in the sector that you are in.
In the game, you have a story line centred around the Khaak attacks and various other subplots involving a strange cloaked ship and some pirates. I don't want to say too much, because that could spoil the fun. The universe is very open ...

Advantages: Excellent graphics, excellent gameplay, open ended gameplay Disadvantages: Extremly buggy, bad storyline, almost unplayble if not patched, demanding on computer
Great game once it has been patched to the latest update which can be downloaded from the egosoft website, however if you play on it without any patches it will be almost unplayable. Some of the best graphics around at the moment which unfrotunatly then puts a lot of strain on your PC and you will need more than the minimum requirements to find it enjoyable. The game can be made great with the script editor where just about anything can be done, ... ...forums which can make the game a whole lot better. The forums also provide a great community for the game and if you have a problem most people on there will try and help you out.
So overall it is a great game especially with the open end gameplay and the awesome graphics can be made even more enjoyable with new scripts. But you will have to download the patches to gain any enjorment out of it . ...

Advantages: Superb Graphics and Modeling Disadvantages: Poor performance and numerous bugs - compatibility issues
I purchased this game 3 weeks ago and since have spent 10 times more time and 20 times more money upgrading my system attempting to acheive playability.
If you dont already have the latest computer out there (or even if you do you may still encounter problems) you may want to save yourself alot of aggravation and pass.
I have had nothing but problems since my first attempt to install (which failed due to corrupted files / faulty CD's)
X3 reunion ... ...just not there YET. The graphics and modeling of the X3 universe is breathtaking and the scale is mind blowing. All of this beauty is however useless if the program will not run properly.
My advice would be to wait until the developers sort out the problems first. ...

X³: REUNION continues to lead the way in offering players the ultimate open ended game play experience, backed by an addictive storyline and intense combat/trading action. Utilising the 'X³ Reality' engine, X³ pushes the graphical boundary to movie quality in-game graphics. TRADE in a new economy, dynamically reactive in pricing relative to supply and demand. FIGHT individual dog fights or command full-scale fleets against massive enemy armadas. Budding trade entrepreneurs can BUILD interconnecting factories to create huge space borne complexes, to truly mass produce commodities. THINK through a professional screen-written story line, to unravel the destiny of the galaxy. The X³: REUNION engine utilizes the very latest DirectX 9 graphical technology; pixel-shader technology is used to create realistic reflections across a variety of surface types, while bump maps and specula maps add detail to the geometry of objects.A freshly developed economy system allows for more imaginative ways to conquer your foes via commerce. Functions using established business models of 'Elasticity of demand', 'Economies of scale' and 'Return on investment'. Factories are constructed by non player characters, which can freely trade; wars in sectors affect the universal economy, while opportunities bring challenges to both novice and experienced players.
