Now, the things to have in mind it's the oddities really The 320 bit bus, the odd memory number (640 instead of the normal 512), and the new word, steam processors..
So, what exactly it's a Steam processor..? Steam processors are a collection of floating points processors. These replace the old pixel and vertex shader.
In old hardware, in some games either you where pixel shader limited, or vertex shader limited, and the hardware would not make the respective balance, giving you low frame rates in certain areas.
Because of the new design (this is a unified architecture) the balance between pixel and vertex shader is better distributed.
But this is a simplistic view folks, so if any incorrections please leave feedback accordingly.
But lets not get our reading spoiled by geek talk. I actually bought the card on launch day, or to be more precise, 4 days before it was launched officially. It was a stroke of luck, and I took the plunge. I had read some rumors in the Internet, and decided to see by myself
First impression are always the lasting memory When I opened the case, I remember thinking: "This is a big (And I mean 9'5 inches) card", and "Black PCB, nice"
So I proceeded to the installation. Remember folks, this is a PCI-Express card. If you still in AGP system, this card is a no-go
Installation was straight forward. Old card out, new card in, took about 10 minutes (including reshuffling of my cables on the Thermaltake Shark case)
System booted up nicely. Installed drivers with CD, and .... had to download new ones from Nvidia site because at that time the drivers that came with the CD where not the best, nor they had all the correct control panel options available
Under XP and after a few driver revisions, the card performed admirably well
It's fast. Actually, it's ridiculously fast, even with high levels of AA and AF. And because my monitor only goes up to 1280*1024....
Far Cry, COD2, Fear, COH, Medieval 2, all with maximum in game settings, no problem. Crank the AA and the AF to the maximum and still all going nice and smooth
Now, one of the things that really surprised me it's image quality Yes there are some people that want their games at 2000fps,and don't mind having jaggies and some shimmering on the screen, while others like me, are happy at 75fps, without jaggies, and no shimmering on the screen whatsoever. The clarity of games on the 8800GTS it's better than anything else out there. It feels and plays games smoother. Heck, I reinstalled FarCry and Painkiller again, and I'm having more fun than ever playing those two oldies
On the Over clocking department, I run my card at 600/2000 (from 500/1600, not a bad over clock)
Now for the bad bits If you really want to take this piece of hardware to the max, you will need a fast processor. My old AMD64 4600+, currently running at 2700, with 2 Gigs of ram, is not doing justice to this card. Neither is my monitor.
Just for comparison, my score on 3DM06 it's 8743, with the CPU at 2700, and the card at 600/1000.
A C2D 6300, over clocked to 3200, will easily score 10100 3DM06
Vista drivers. I'm currently running Vista 32 Bit Ultimate, and I must say that is pretty stable (writing this review via Vista), although there is still some improvement to be had on the driver front. Saying that, all my games run fairly well under Vista, so It's just a question of tunning performance
An excellent piece of hardware, although still with a hefty premium (If you look hard enough around some e-tailers, you can get a nice price)
Advantages: Excellent performance and reliability Disadvantages: Size
I managed to buy this card for a very cheap price, as the new series of graphics cards had just been released, and the store I bought it from was clearing out their 8800's at a fraction of the original price.
I was upgrading my PC from an 8600GT card, and the difference was immediately noticable. I could run my games at much higher settings, and could play left 4 dead and far cry 2, a pair of fairly visually intensive games, at very high settings. ...

Advantages: Robust and still powerfull Disadvantages: Quite alot of products which beat it at a reasonable price.
Poor Card, Getting quite old now. Had this card for a year and a half and its never let me down. Its been very stable and robust over the last year and a bit, surviving through them without a problem. There are much better new cards out now, yes, but if you can grab this for quite cheap, its definetly worth it. Don't expect to be playing crysis on very high with full settings, but this card can easily manage most of todays games, with a decent fps. ... ...or COD 4, it runs like a dream on both of those. The new expansion to WoW is pushing it, but it still holds strong. I'm afraid I'm unable to comment on how well it overclocks as i've never tried with this card. So Like I said above, if your able to get this card for cheap, then its worth it. But right now, there are alot of cards out there which give alot better fps, for a fair amount.
PS, I accept no responsibility of anything happening due to ...

Advantages: Known Manufacture, and Great value for money Disadvantages: New 512mb, updated core has been released.
compatible very well supported in Vista now, I imagine it will play any game at an acceptable level for the foreseable future aswell.
With this model in particular I have been running COD4, World in Conflict, and Crysis at high detail settings without problems and maintain over 35 fps. This is at 1280x1024, running on a AMD X2 5200 with 2GB of RAM. OS is Vista 64.
The XFX model is great with its life time warranty which makes it a safe purchase and it performs just as well as any other card. They may not overclock there cards as much has other suppliers but the overclock it plenty and is an extra 1 FPS really that important. To me a stable well performing card from a well known manufactures is the most important and I feel this is what you get with this card. This card is still cheaper than the 512mb version so if you want to spend less than ...
Advantages: Ease of installation, Speed and power Disadvantages: Size of card.
I brought this card just over a week ago and am very happy with my purchase. I upgraded it from a GeForce 8500 GT 256MB. The card itself is quite large and takes up 2 slots. It was very easy to install. I have never installed a new graphics card before and didn't come across any problems, also the latest drivers are included. The card also supports HD and movies and DVD playback are very good. The power of the card itself is huge and i have notice a huge increase in performance in games. I can now play games like battlefield 2142 in 1600 x 1200 in full detail, and also Quake 4 at ludicrous resolutions with all settings on full. For the price that the card is selling for i believe it is a bargain, and also the best bang for your buck, and am now saving my cash up to get another card to run a SLI setup. Woohoo! Overall very satisified. ...
Advantages: Quick, apparently quiet. Disadvantages: Only on DVI converter, 2 slot design may not suit all.
My experience of this card is currently only short lived as i only received it 3 days ago, but my its a goody!
Compared to the shoddy 5 year old relic that was my old system (AMD Athlon XP 2800 with GeForce 4 Ti4600) this system wipes the floor with it (Athlon 64 x2 6000) Need for Speed Most Wanted in 1024x768 with all detail levels whacked to the max! It looks beautiful, and smooth.
I was impressed that the card was very well protected in polystyrene type foam.+
This card is a 2 slotter, therefore needing plenty of space, even more so if you intend to use 2 in SLi mode.
My only gripe is the box only included 1 DVI to v-sub converter as my main monitor is still a creaky old CRT and don't have the money for a flat panel!
Luckily my old Ti4600 had 2 so i could use 2 CRT monitors if i wanted.
I must say i haven't really noticed any ...
The 8800GTS just got its wings and is ready to deliver insane action like you've never seen or heard. Using Nvidia's Quantum engine technology, this nasty little card practically bends the space/time continuum and makes physics cards obsolete.
