A review of XXX Extra Strong Mints

Well, before I went on holiday just over a week ago I went to stock up on mints. I decided that I wanted something a bit stronger than Polo's or Murray Mints to sustain me through the 100+ mile drive. Then, I saw them on offer - a three pack of XXX mints. They claim to be the strongest extra strong mint on the market. This was worth investigating.
Packaging

The mints are in a foil wrapping with a paper outer wrapping. There are two rows of three large red X's with Extra Strong written across the last X. Underneath one row it says it says The Stronger Extra Strong Mints. Under the other row it says Can you handle them. (Well, you have to really - just before you suck them to death.) The o's in the words are made to look like mints. I've included a picture as the pack design is slightly different now.

Quick Facts

+ Fox's lauched these mints in 1987.
+ They were so popular the triple pack was launched in 2002.
+ A pack of these weighs 46g, but more interesting is that it contains 18 mints.
+ Not suitable for vegetarians as they contain beef gelatine.

+ ALLERGY ALERT - They may contain traces of nuts.

Nutritional Information per 100g

Calories ... 393 kcal (that's 10 kcal per sweet)
Protein .... 0.7g
Sugar ..... 97.6g

No fat, fibre or salt.

Main Ingredients

Sugar, Glucose Syrup, Edible Starch (edible? that's a relief!), Gelatine, Flavourings (mint I presume), Stabiliser (Xanthan gum)

My Opinion/Experience

When you first open the pack there is a slightly minty smell (I would have been surprised if it was anything else). However, once you pop one of the white sweets into your mouth, you get a strong peppermint flavour straight away. The mints are a disc shape - 2.2cm diameter and 0.5cm thick. They have a very slightly powdery feel to them, not enough to make a mess of yourself though. I found them to be very refreshing and the taste lingers for quite a long time. As there are no artificial sweeteners you don't get that awful aftertaste either. If you draw in your breath, after you've sucked one, you get a cool feeling at the back of your throat.

Would I recommend them? Yes, I would. I sadly timed myself and found a gentle suck would give you 7 minutes of minty delight. So, for me, each pack held over two hours worth of mints. However, it wouldn't be a good idea ot have a whole pack in one go - that would be half of your recommended daily sugar amount gone! These are not sweets that I would chomp - they are very hard. I didn't want to risk my teeth on them.

As these are big and strong flavoured sweets, I do not think that I would recommend them for small children.

Are they the strongest on the market? Well, they're the strongest I've had.

Price and Availability I bought mine at Morrisons. They were (and I think still are) on offer at two packs of three for 89p. That's just under 15p a packet, less than 1p a sweet. Quite a bargain! I think that all major Supermarkets stock them and I've seen them in Woolworth.
