Advantages Xbox offers more, PS3 doesn't break down as much
Disadvantages Xbox has a rep for breaking down
The facts are simple, the Xbox 360 and the PS3 are both identical when it comes to graphics, audio and gameplay, it is literally a choice of Sony or Microsoft, but there are a few things that could put either console up over the other.
The Xbox 360 has Xbox Live, a service that could warrant a console purchase alone, with the ability to download movies, demos and games all at your fingertips without leaving the home, any gamer would be interested. While the PS3 is able to deliver free online gaming a good number of exclusive titles, its all down to the gamer. On the topic of price, however, one console easily sails over the competition as the best for the money. For $400 you could buy a PS3 with an 80GB hard drive, a wireless controller and your standard HD cables and Ethernet cables. Whereas for $400 you can buy an Xbox 360 Elite bundle, you get the Xbox 360 Elite console, one wireless controller,. a 120GB hard drive, a headset and your standard HD cables and Ethernet cables, but on top of that you can get two of the best games the console has to offer, Fable 2 and Halo 3, although this changes with time.
I think its pretty clear who is giving you more for your money, there is no doubt that the Xbox 360 Elite is much more bang for your buck, but with its up's it also has it's downs. Pretty much everyone knows that the Xbox 360 has had its fair share of problems and its not just a small percentage that Microsoft would like to have you believe that is experiencing these problems. Of everyone I know with a 360 console, all of them have had it break at least once, in my own experience I have had two consoles break on me now, my original Elite console and then the replacement Elite console I was given. So while the price is nice, don't expect the console to work 100% of the time, and with the customer service getting worse and worse now is not a good time to buy a 360. Just months ago if your console had broke you would be given a box to send it in to, but now it would seem Microsoft are pulling more and more money out of the service now making the user find their own box but they will pay for the shipping of the item. But when your paying $400 for a console, this isn't really acceptable, especially when the warranty ends at 3 years.
Not to say that the PS3 is free from problems, it has a fair share of its own, just it doesn't nearly touch on the amount of breakdown's the Xbox 360 has. So if you want more for you money, definitely get the Xbox Elite, but if you don't like having to go console-less for a month at time every time it breaks, buy a PS3.

Good write-up, well-articulated. Still not sold on the idea the 360 is better value simply because the base unit is slightly cheaper though. As you said, it doesn't offer free online gaming like the PS3, so the 360s subscription surely makes it quite a bit more expensive over the course of a generation.

Interesting comparison - I know Sony has a reputation for costing x% more "just because it's Sony", whereas Microsoft prices somewhat more competitively so it hits a particular sweet-spot... a nice pros/cons review.
