Why I chose Xenical

I have been overweight most of my life, as well as being type one diabetic, as the two don’t go well together I decided it was time to lose weight. I had looked at diet and slimming aids in the past, however the only ones available were either pharmaceutical speed or water reducing tablets disguised as natural slimming products.

I discussed the options for diets with my dietician and my consultant; they both suggested I try xenical. As I already had a high body mass index (44.1) I only had to lose 2.5kgs naturally to be able to use xenical. I was also advised that taking a multivitamin, which contained vitamin d, was a good idea as xenical can cause vitamin d deficiency, as this is a fat-soluble vitamin. Also be aware that if you take cod liver oil no not take it within an hour of taking xenical as this will also have an effect, I found this out very suddenly one day!!!

I started taking 3 tablets a day before every meal I ate that contained fat. I was advised to eat meals with less than 5 per cent fat, any higher and I would have side effects from the xenical. On odd occasions I would have take always, even going for the items with the lowest fat content could still cause me problems. I had very loose, fatty bowel movements, and v v v occasionally I would leak an oil like substance from the bowels, this was when I had been v v naughty and had chips or something very fatty. Gradually with exercise I did start too lose small amounts of weight 1-2 lbs a week, which is what is expected. My blood sugars also started reducing and being much more stable as high fat levels can hold onto insulin therefore it is not used properly by the body.

Unfortunately I had to stop taking the medication as I started having haemorrhages from my bowel and had too have major surgery and lost the right ascending colon. This was not in any way due to xenical but due to a deformity in the bowel, which I am slowly learning to live with.

I have just started taking xenical again in the last month, this is because I will have to have more bowel removed later this year or early next and want to lose weight for the surgery.

What is xenical?

Xenical is a drug called a lipase inhibitor; this stops the body from absorbing 30% of your fat intake. Your body removes the fat via its natural wastage system through the gut and into the bowel. Therefore if you eat a meal with a high fat content your’e stools will contain the 30% fat. The stoll will look orange in colour and be very oily and hard too flush away. Eating too much fat can also cause diahorea and wet farts which can also leak an oil like substance.

Xenical unlike most of the old diet aids does not have any effect on the brain or the central nervous system.

To be prescribed xenical you must have a body mass index of above 30, or above 28 in people with other high risk factors such as diabetes or heart disease. You must also lose some weight naturally, the current national guidelines are 2.5 kgs. Orlistat is taken three times a day 120mg per capsule, and should be taken for no more than 2 years.

Treatment should continue beyond 3 months only if weight loss is greater than 5% from start of treatment , Treatment should continue beyond 6 months only if weight loss is greater than 10% from start of treatment.

Xenical should not be taken if you have malabsortion syndrome, cholestasis (this is a disorded of the liver).

Xenical cannot be taken during pregnancy or whilst breastfeeding!!!

Side Effects

Urgent or increased bowel movements, Flatulence with an oily discharge, fatty stools, if you have an allergy to any of the ingredients of xenival you may get itching, rashes, breathing difficulties (see a doctor immediately), vommiting and a general feeling of being unwell.

Xenical also has an effect on the absorbtion of some vitamins and minerals including vitamin d, vitamin e and beta carotene, so if you do not have a well balanced diet your doctor may suggest you take a vtamin supplement.

So how much did I lose

Well last year I lost 2 stone before I had to stop due to surgery, I have so far lost 6Ibs this year and hope for more.

One pack is one prescription item so you pay for one prescription. However if you are insulin dependent diabetic you get prescriptions free on the nhs.
