Oohhh, got the keys to my new house, the place is a complete tip but hey, it's MY tip. The big move is on Sunday. Okay... "big shout out to Arcuntil42". BTW, could lazy tweens who don't bother to return rates please stop slating those who do?
Xenical is a prescription-only tablet that can be taken to speed up weight loss. Xenical claims that those who would normally lose one or two pounds a week on a normal diet could lose three or four pounds if taking Xenical at the same time. Ideally it's suitable for those who are obese with a body mass index of 30 or more (see www.nhlbisupport.com/bmi/ to calculate your BMI) or for those who are overweight with serious health problems such as a heart condition. You can buy these tablets over the internet however it is inadvisable to do so not least because you can't be sure what you're really buying.
What does Xenical do?
Each tablet is a small blue encased capsule that you swallow whole before or after each meal so you don't even have to taste it. Xenical works by blocking 30% of your fat intake at every meal time. So for every 10 grams of fat you eat, 3 grams will pass straight through your
system undigested. The obvious benefit to this is that you can follow an ultra low-fat diet without having to sacrifice an unhealthy amount of food from your diet. Because fat is the main culprit where weight gain is concerned, Xenical cuts it down for you while allowing you to consume healthy amounts of other, more important food types such as protein and vitamins.
My Xenical Experience
I started taking Xenical in January 2008 having put on a bit too much weight over the Christmas season. I was already fat to start with so gaining six pounds really did matter. Ordinarily, a GP will ask you to go away and lose a few kilos before prescribing Xenical but this wasn't necessary in my case because I'd lost some weight just before Christmas. There's no problem with prescribing this drug before someone has lost weight, but GPs are advised to ensure they only prescribe this drug to those who are committed to use it properly. Otherwise, it would be a waste of NHS time and funding. It's important to get weighed and checked by your GP each month to make sure the prescription is still working for you too; you might not get a repeat otherwise.
Taking the tablets is easy and soon becomes routine. You take one tablet three times a day with each of your main meals and try to avoid snacking. At the same time, you can also make use of the free weight loss program offered by the drug's manufacturer, Roche. This weight loss pack is designed to assist you in reassessing your eating habits and re-educating yourself on what a healthy diet should really contain. I personally haven't bothered with this because I know exactly why I put on a lot of weight (illness two years ago); but I think if I'd become overweight through letting my habits slip, this would be very helpful to me.
The side-effects of this drug are unfortunately everything others describe them to be and they take a little getting used to in all honesty! The wind is bearable, as are the oily stools. But when you get a rush of undigested fat cells rush through your system, that's when the side-effects start to get a bit uncomfortable. That said; it serves to remind you extremely well just why you shouldn't have eaten that chocolate bar! Xenical isn't supposed to have any effect if taken more than one hour after eating but I actually feel it does have effect on in between meal snacks at times even if its minimally so. Extremely fatty eaters will quickly find themselves unable to eat anywhere near as much fat as they've become accustomed to because of these oily diarrhoea bouts; but that is surely a helpful side effect for someone needing a good shove out of the biscuit tin?
In the nine weeks I've been taking this drug I've lost seventeen pounds and am well on my way to being a healthy weight again. If I'd have dieted normally without taking this drug, I'm confident my weight loss would have only been in the region of eight pounds at most which is rather disheartening for two months worth of dieting when you've got a lot of weight to lose. It's great that I can look in the mirror and see results already because of course it's a factor in keeping me on the straight and narrow. Equally, I make a conscious effort to avoid fatty foods now because I don't want to suffer the consequences! Although we all know that eating fatty foods has consequences in the long run, when you're very overweight, it's all too easy to dismiss them out of hand in the short term.
My only minor concern with taking this drug is that I've been feeling unwell for about six weeks now. I started taking Xenical three weeks before I began to feel unwell so I would like to emphasise that this may or may not be related. The leaflet that comes with the tablets does suggest consulting your GP to see if you should take a multivitamin alongside taking this medication though my own GP felt it wasn't necessary. I've had a series of blood tests conducted this week to see if there is in fact an underlying cause for my fatigue and poor immune system. If there isn't, I will try taking a multivitamin and update my review with my findings later on.
Recommendation
If your body mass index is 30 or more (or you're overweight with a serious illness) and you've been struggling to get your weight down, I really do recommend talking to your GP about Xenical. It annoys me a little when people refer to taking this weight loss aid as "cheating"; it isn't cheating, it's getting a little help. I fail to see how it can be considered greatly different from attending a slimming club or taking meal-replacement shakes.
Xenical won't be right for everyone, especially those that are overweight for ongoing emotional issues or those with other health problems. But a lot of people who are at the stage of wanting to change having gradually noticed their weight has crept up and up over the months or years will benefit from the boost this drug can offer their diet.
I'll continue to use this drug until I lose the other three stone or until I decide not taking it might make me feel a bit perkier.
Well done on your weight loss, I hope you soon reach your goal. Lin

This is in no way a criticism, as to some extent i believe in animal testing for important medical breakthroughs. But, to make you aware, if you already weren't, Roche conduct animal testing. In the interest of fairness here is the URL for the website. http://www.roche.com/home/sustainability/sus_csoc-res-2/sus_csoc-res-anim-2.htm

A very good review with an eye catching title lol.
Advantages: Steady, safe weight loss. No side effects if used properly. Disadvantages: Loose stools and wind (but only if you don't follow the advice given).
