I have owned my Xerox 4800TA OneTouch for a few weeks now and received it as a present (I think around £70.00 was paid). It is available on Amazon for around £68 with free delivery.
The scanner looks very good, is streamlined and modern looking with its attractive new slim line design. It has a USB connection but has no alternative of parallel or serial. It has a side opening rather than it being hinged on the short edge which I found much more convenient in the location I keep it in my computer desk (limited room above so less space required for side opening was great).
Installation was simple enough and there is a simple step by step instruction sheet included with pictures so even a novice computer user could install this scanner with little or
no problem. I have scanned a fair few things now and have been impressed with the quality. I have scanned photographs, text and things like passports - all very good. Company logo's scan very well indeed. The only problem I have found is that flesh tones are a little disappointing as the come out over-saturated and largely unnatural looking.
My scanner before this one was a Mikrotec which I found to be very temperamental and often didn't work, touch wood so far with the Xerox I have experienced no problems at all.
Here is a brief outline of the features:
Bluetooth: No Colour Depth in Bits: 48 Colour depth (bits per pixel): 48 Document Feeder Type: Flatbed Feed: Flatbed Film Adapter: Yes Firewire: No Maximum Document Size: 12 Inch (30 cm) A4 Parallel Interface: No SCSI: No Scan Resolution in dpi: 1200 Scanner Colour: Colour Scanner Colour / Black & White: Colour Scanner Resolution (dpi): 1200 Scanner Type: Flatbed Scanner with Film / Slide Adapter: Yes Serial Interface: No USB: Yes USB Interface: Yes
The scanner has five One Touch buttons, four of which are pre-configured, allowing you to send scanned images straight to PaperPort for editing, email, OCR for editing text or a printer. The fifth button is the Custom button and can be programmed to send a scanned image to any image, text, fax or print application.
The scanner comes compete with a range of software: Paperport, Textbridge and Ulead PhotoExpress.
PaperPort is an image management application. It creates thumbnails of everything you scan allowing easy filing in colour-coded folders. This is the software that you actually use to scan photos etc.
Textbridge is an OCR engine which automatically converts typed or printed documents into editable documents and sends them to your word processor whilst Ulead PhotoExpress gives you a powerful yet easy-to-use editing tool which can be used to personalise your favourite photos in no time. This is a similar idea to Adobe Photoshop but is somewhat lacking in features if you are an advanced user however more than adequate for most people.
The only downside to the scanner is that I don't think it is terribly easy to use the settings to scan and set your own preferences, even once you have made your settings it does not seem to retain them for the next time you scan. I can see this aspect of the scanner somewhat of a problem for the novice user. If you are happy with the default settings then scanning is no problem what so ever, as I described above it is literally one touch and away you go. Changing settings is a little more difficult and certainly requires a little more knowledge. However this is probably true to say about all scanners.
Here are the minimum systems requirements:
Pentium equivalent Processor or higher Requires Windows 98/2000/Millennium/XP 64MB of RAM (128MB for Windows XP) 160MB of free Hard Disk space CD-ROM drive Colour monitor USB port
The Xerox 4800 TA is the ideal solution for the home but equally I could see it being a great advantage to small office user who wants a fast and easy-touch scanner. The best thing I find about the scanner is the one touch technology. You simply insert the thing you want to scan press one button conveniently located on the front of the scanner and away you go.

Good review. Really thorough. Some of the technical bits put me off a bit, but you got plenty of your opinions in there which balanced it out. It does look very stylish. Esther x.
