My Xerox Docuprint XJ6C was acquired a few months ago. Previously it had been plugged into my girlfriends PC but had been rarely used so we decided it’d be better used connected up to my machine.
I am unsure if this model of Docuprint is still available to buy, I suspect not as this printer is 2 years old now, and was bundled free with a PC offer.
For more Information visit www.xerox.co.uk which is an excellent resource, especially for the latest drivers.
The printer was simple to set up on my computer and involved plugging the standard printer cable from printer to PC, and power lead. We couldn’t locate the original disk with the driver on, but as I now have Windows Me I thought it would be best to get the latest driver from Xerox. The latest driver was installed without problem and ran straight from an EXE file. It was around 1.5Mb in size if I remember rightly!
The printer is of a compact design, is the usual PC hardware cream colour, and sits away nicely under a typcial computer desk. It has an on/off button, a button to help install new cartridges and also status indicators for your ink cartridges. More about them later...
After I’d set it up it had trouble printing. This was because as I say it had been rarely used in 2 years. I suspected the cartridges had dried up but a simple “Clean cartridges” option from printer properties helped this situation. Oh, and I aligned the cartridges too, from the same menu.
One of the best things about this printer is that there are 4 separate ink slots inside. These are for black, cyan, magenta and yellow. The printer will use combinations of these as needed to create any colour your printable document requires!
Obviously this means you only need to replace the cart’s as they run out. The status of each is indicated on the printer control panel, which automatically displays itself when you run a print job. As a back up, there are 4 lights on the printer itself. Currently I’m told the black is very low.
The cost of the cartridges is usually around £8- £10. The cheapest place on the “High Street” that I have seen is in Staples, and I think they are just under £8. On the web globaldirect.co.uk, to name but one store have them for £5.95 ex vat, which is a bargain, although I haven’t checked postage costs yet!!
I’ve noticed recently that some web stores have really cheap compatible cartridges for most models of printer, at around the £4.00 mark. I have read good and bad reports of such cartridges, but I suspect the whole quality, i.e. ink and ink well, is substandard so I’m going to buy originals I think!
The print quality given by this Docuprint is very acceptable for a 2-year-old printer, and is certainly of a good quality. Obviously it is not of laser quality, but then what do you expect? From the printer control panel you can specify various options to make your print outs better or worse using such options as ink saver (worse), high quality (better) and photo quality (better still I assume but only if using the best paper around!)
Recommended, if you can find one in as good condition as mine is! I would certainly look at a new Xerox in the future, as this model is a breeze to use!
The only downside is that it can be a little noisy, but this is of little concern since the CD players normally spinning away here... ...
PS - I found the title for this a tough one to muster, may have to change it...
great op with a really crummy title - love it!
My printer's playing up lately so I'm going to replace it... I will have to check out Xerox.... the cartridge's sound like a cheaper idea that my printer too which just has the one colour cartridge which is a pain if you run out of one colour.
all the best,
happy printing,
si

1) Are you aware that Xerox will stop selling printers for personal use? 2) Good picture quality? As a demoboy selling printers now and then, I can hardly believe that!

Interesting read. Now if only I could find an interesting comment to make.
