...cable into it.
- Connect using a standard RJ-11 telephone cable on the road or at home, you don’t need any specific modem dongle, only a cable with RJ-11 sockets at both ends (and a BT adapter if you’re in UK)
- Mobile phone capability and GlobalACCESS™ features deliver information around the world (the card is GSM ready, you need only a cable if you want to connect your mobile phone, for true mobility. Actually, it really works fine, presuming you get the right phone cable. Beware that there are different cables for makes – e.g. Nokia, Motorola, but also different cables for the same maker, but with different models, as a cable for Nokia 6110 will not work with a Nokia 6310. Best thing to do is to test the cable or get an assessment from the vendor that it works with a specific mobile phone model)

Advantages: Should have been an easy connectivity solution Disadvantages: It doesn't work !
...This review relates entirely to the GSM Upgrade for this modem card / phone combination. As a connection to land line the modem card works very reliably.

I installed, or tried to install the upgrade but it failed. A call to Psion reveals they have a problem with their marketing (8/11/2001). Even though the GSM Upgrade box is labelled for a Nokia 6210 and the picture on the glossy instructions clearly show the Gold Card V34+Fax on the front Psion admit that this modem card will NOT work with the GSM Upgrade.
Psion are now working hard to rectify their marketing material and after an intial delay dealt with my complaint to my complete satisfaction...

Advantages: Relatively cheap now, good speed Disadvantages: There are new technologies now on the market
...I had a Psion Gold Card 56K Modem + Fax, but it was also GSM and ISDN ready. Now I upgraded to GSM, buying a cable (relatively cheap) for a Nokia mobile phone and downloading the upgrade from Psion website. And it works very well, much faster than a infrared connection from a laptop to a mobile phone. Everything was relatively easy to install and configure, so even if you are not a techy person (as me :), you're able to do it yourself.
As a card, The Psion Dacom Global Gold Card is a leading PC card modem, used worldwide in all Dell computers, but also in Compaqs or other makers. Use this same world class modem with the Psion Series 5/5mx or 3c/3mc. All you need is the Psion PC Card modem adapter. Connect your handheld computer to the world for email, web browsing, faxing. For true mobility, you need to connect your PC card modem...

I've said it before, and I'll say it again, I don't like phones. I don't like the interruption, I don't like the costs, and I don't like having to talk to someone I can't see. However, it seems I am alone in this, and the whole rest of the world loves... more
Over the last 8 years, I have steadfastly stuck to the one brand of mobile phone, the Nokia. Basic reason being that I pretty much knew what I was getting and could mostly guarantee a trusty reliable phone for the year I had the contract.
So,... more
