I have unfortunately inherited a few nasty genes from my mother, the majority of which I won’t share on this site, luckily for anyone reading this opinion. The inheritance I will be writing about today is huge, dark bags below my eyes. I may ‘only’ be 36, but I have had baggy, dark eye sacks since I was in my early 20s. I have tried a number of creams supposed to reduce either or both conditions, but nothing has ever worked. Then I read an opinion by Miss-D on Yves Saint Laurent Touche Eclat and I hoped my prayers had been answered.
The product does not claim to reduce eye bags or dark colours, but instead hides the darkness by covering it up with a light reflecting liquid. Apparently this wonder product, recommended by many celebrities and beautymagazines, is only available at Harrods and Debenhams. Fortunately I have a local Debenhams, so I decided to visit one lunchtime. Unfortunately, by
the time I got there I had forgotten the name of the product, so I asked for some help at the YSL counter by saying ‘I have been recommended one of your products, but I can’t remember its name’. The beautifully made-up assistant immediately guessed it was Touche Eclat without me even saying what the product was for, as it is their most popular product.
She then offered to apply some for me so I could see it working. She used a cotton bud to apply the liquid from a tester and gently dabbed some on below my eye and above it in the socket near the nose. She only applied it one side and I could definitely see a difference, so I agreed to buy it. Fortunately, then she applied it the other side so I didn’t look as if I had been punched.
When I got it home and used it myself, I closely inspected the results. Although there was a difference, my eyes are so very dark, that it didn’t hide the colour completely. It does blend in very well and is not obvious, unless you put too much on. A very important point was that it did nothing to hide the puffiness of the bags, as by now I have permanent creases. I was recommended their eye gel for that purpose, but at £28 I declined. It can be worn with or without make-up, which was also great for me as I rarely wear make-up and I wouldn’t have bought it otherwise. I have read that if you want to wear it with make-up that you should put it on after the foundation, before the powder.
It is ridiculously expensive at £20 for a small elegant gold coloured ‘pen’ containing 2.5 ml of liquid inside a gold box. However, look out for it in duty free shops and abroad as it can be bought for as ‘little’ as £15. The pen is a great size for handbags, if you feel the need to retouch during the day. Once you remove the lid of the pen there are some white bristles at the top, which you use to apply the liquid. These are an excellent idea, as they do not drag the delicate eye area like other applicators might. To get the liquid to the brush you click a small black knob at the top of the pen. Initially, you need to do this about 30 times (I thought I had a dud one until I read the instructions).
You basically paint the liquid on to the areas you need covering. This will mostly be around the eye, but it can also be used in other shadowy areas like the crease between the cheeks and the mouth. The instructions also mention using it to enhance the appearance of your lips by applying it to the contours. To finish, just blend lightly with your fingertips. Generally I have found that you need one click per eye. I have read that this ‘pen’ will last around 6 months, using once a day. My pen is certainly not getting much lighter and I have had it for 1 month.
I have also read that there are 3 different shades, the darker one only being available at Harrods, but the Debenhams assistant told me that they now only do one shade. If true, this is a shame as the colour I have bought would be too light if my face had a tan. Looking at my box, it does have a ‘1’ on it as if this is a shade number, so I might have been given duff information.
Touche Eclat (or Radiant Touch) claims to ‘add highlight, refresh your make-up and brighten your complexion’. Interestingly, no written claims to hide dark eye shadows, but it does mention ‘offsetting the complexion’s dulling tendencies and reviving its own natural glow’.
I believe that this product would be a miracle product if I had average dark circles under my eyes rather than Michael Aspel bags and darkness normally associated with 10 nights on the town in a row with no sleep whatsoever. It is very expensive, but does last a long time, and because it does definitely make a difference, I will probably buy it again as long as I don’t have to take out a second mortgage. If you have a Debenhams near you, go and visit the Yves Saint Laurent counter and get a free application. You can then judge it for yourself.
UPDATE: I do believe it is working! I didn't apply and Touche Eclat today as it was Sunday and I wasn't expecting to see anyone. My partner looked at me funnily and asked me if I was OK as I looked as if I had a black eye. This was the first day I hadn't worn it since buying it, and he noticed a difference (albeit in an unflattering way!).
