Yahoo messenger is one of the oldest versions of a chat style communication programme. With this programme you can add your friends/colleugues/family to your contact list. If that person accepts your invitation every time they come online when you are online you will be alerted. Also every time you connect they will be alerted. This is so you can know when a friend is online so you can instant message them. I think the whole idea of being able to see whether another person is online is great but you need to have a good design/layout so you can use the features when you want and not have to try to find the features.

This messenger service is in desperate need of a makeover. although it has a few features that can spice up your conversations the colours are really dull. The start screen for yahoo messenger is completely white with a bot of grey not exactly stylish. Although the looks of messenger arent that great. Its what is on the inside that counts right? Well inside the unstylish nerd like exterior there is an inside that has easy accessable features with quite big buttons so you cant miss them. This is a must for all messenger services as if you cant find what you want you arent going to use it.

chat;
an instant button to get you into the yahoo chat service just click a button and a new window will apear showing you your choice of room. I use this fairly often as i enjoy talking to people. There are many yahoo rooms to choose from which makes finding one that you fit into really easy. The layout of chat is very similar to the layout of the messenger service which i beleive needs a bit of spicing up. You can also create your own chat room with this which you cant do on most other chat room facilities. You can use this so you and your friends can have a chat room all to yourselves which is great as you can choose to have it unlisted making it as private as you messenger
mobile conversation;
With this feature you can have a conversation with any mobile within the USA or INDIA pretty pointless if you dont live in the vicinity of these countries unless you know someone who does. If it is possible for you to use this you can have a instant message conversation for free via the internet. Your message is sent as an sms (text message) and if the other person wishes to respond they must use the reply feature only. This would be great if only i could use it. I think the programmers at yahoo need to add England/ the british to the list of compatible countries. Whats the point in having this feature if you cant use it?
Add;
This is one of the beauties of messenger services you can be safe while chatting. It is even safe for your children to use this as the only way for someone to get into a conversation with you is if you add them yourself putting them into your safe list or you accept their invitation. This gives you complete control over who you speak to. Although the whole point of this is to keep strangers out if you want to get more contacts you could always just spread your address around chat rooms. I do not think this would produce appropriate material though.
Features from conversation
send file;
With this you can transfer any file from your computer onto someone elses. A little more than Normal download time is needed and this is much easier than sending an e-mail attachment as there is no size limit or time limit. Although if you have freeserve anytime (it cuts off every 2 hours) you will have a 2 hour limit as once you disconnect you cannot restart from the position you were in and you have to start all over agian. This gets really annoying as when you have downloaded 90% of your file and then it cuts off you need to start all over again and you perhaps should use a stroage version like www.sreamload.com
Webcam;
with this feature you can use a plug in webcam so that the other person who you are speaking to can see you. If they have a webcam also you can have a video conversation. I dont currently have a webcam although i would be interested in buying a cheap one. This should not be used by young children on chat rooms as there is all sorts of perverts out there. I have used one of these a while back when on holiday in greece. Depending on what kind of webcam you have you usually get a picture that refreshes every 10/20 seconds depending on how much you pay for it. This is a bit boring as if you want to show someone something you must hold it up for up to 10 to 20 seconds. If i was going to buy one id get a continuous picture one.
voice;
similar to webcam but this is only voice and is cheaper. Although both of the services are free the hardware does cost an average mike is £5 while a cheap webcam is £30. With this feature you can have a conversation similar to using a telephone. Which is much cheaper if you have an anytime plan from your isp. The sound quality is bad on long distance conversations but is good on ones that are in the same country. You may also experiaence echos which drives me crazy.
invite;
perhaps you want to introduce someone to your friend you can do this with this feature. You can invite anyone into your conversation if the other person does/does not have them on there contact list. However if someone else invites you into a conversationyou are not comfortable with you just need to close the window. I like this feature as i have just moved schools in september and did not get everyone from the old schools e-mail adress before i left so when i talked to one of my friends they invited others that i didnt have time to get their e-mail adress which really helps if you move school/work
ignore;
another great feature. You can decide to block/ignore someone on your contact list. If you have blocked them they cannot see whether you are online however you can see if they are online. I only normally use this when i have had an argument with someone. I block them and then a few days latr unblock them. I think this feature is great as you are in complete control over who you speak to
imviroment;
this stands for instant message enviroment. You can add colour to the background of your conversation so you lose the boring white and you can gain almost any colour from a moving green fructis background to a still black one its up to you. i normally go for the green (same colour as my kitchen lol) as it is more vibrant and gets rid of the problems with the layout on the start page.
Helper;
A great way to help you while you use the yahoo service. If you need any help while you are using yahoo messenger you can just instant message the yahoo helper- a robot programmed to give you an answer. If you dont find help here you can try the help area.
Overall i use this messenger really often not as much as msn (not quite sure why) but i do use it. the help is great its easy to use. Although it does take about an hour to download and install :(. It is always online never a problem, with many features, manufacturer support is great and value for money it free so you cant go wrong. Altogether a ***** 5 star programme
Advantages: Easy and convenient chat and most commonly used Disadvantages: hangs some of the time and slows down system performance

Right then, somehow, despite being certain of rating an opinion on it the other day, I am the very first person to ever attempt a review on Yahoo Messenger. So if someone who has a working search facility could direct me to the correct location I will ask CIAO to move it, but for now it appears I am the first. Hopefully I'll set a good tone.
Now I am a fan of MSN Messenger myself, but I also use Yahoo (and ICQ for that matter). I generally feel ... ...(other than numebr of contacts) is the lookout, generally you can do all the same things on each individual one. However, there two features that Yahoo have that MSN does not, and that is the ability ti sign in invisibly. This is like automatically signing in to 'appear offline' in MSN. I like this as it means you can see who is online before you show yourself - handy if you are not in the mood to talk to certain people, you don't have to talk to ...

Advantages: Chat to people all over the world. Disadvantages: Easy to get booted, Can be slow sometimes.
I have now used yahoo messanger for the best part of 2-3 years, and i have to say, of all the Messanger's you can use, including msn, and icq etc, this is the best i think.

The actually signing up and downloading the software is pretty straight forward.
You goto http://messenger.yahoo.com/ , you then click on messanger, which is located in the connect section on the yahoo website.
... ...you can choose what version you want to download, either the windows version, mac version or unix. most of us will be downloading the pc version i am guessing.
the latest available at the moment is version 5.5, which is at the top of the screen, all you do is click the get now button. When you click this, it will download it off the internet.

I have been using Yahoomessenger for about 4/5 years now, I also use MSN, Windows and AOL messengers but have always preferred Yahoo.
To use Yahoomessenger you need a Yahoo ID and password which if you dont have already you can easily get from yahoo's homepage (www.yahoo.co.uk). After you've got a yahoo ID you need to download the messenger programme, also available from the yahoo homepage. After the programmes downloaded you open the messenger and type in your yahoo ID and password, there's a box that you can check to set the programme to remember them so you dont have to type it in every time, you then connect to the internet and Yahoomessenger connects automatically. I have been using YahooMessenger for about 3 years now and I have to say I get so much fun out of it and make new friend all the time. Another good thing about YahooMessenger is that you can speak to people in your own area (E.G) UK. Also you can make your own rooms and if you were to name it something like the area you live in then the people from your area will come in.

YahooMessenger- what is it? It is an instant messenger just like ICQ, Aim, and MSN Messenger. It allows you to add friends to your buddy list and talk to them in an instant. In your text you can use different fonts, colours and even include smiley faces.
Another good point about this software is that you can send offline messages- when a friend is offline you can send a message and the will receive it when they come online, kinda like e-mail but much easier and quicker. Another good feature is you can also use the yahoo chat rooms, but with yahoo pager you can chat through it and you don?t have to go to any websites.
You can also search for friends, search for someone by Keyword, by their yahoo id, or by their real name. It really is cool.
