Many years ago you could leave your door unlocked, people would feel safe in their homes and as they walked the street but now we life in a different world. Individuals no longer feel safe in their own homes and look to do whatever they can to protect themselves and feel safe. This can be achieved through many different ways. Strong locks, doors and windows, security lighting and finally alarm systems.

Not so long ago an alarm system was considered to be an expensive luxury, as many would have to be installed professionally. With the changes in technology and the introduction of wireless technology many systems can now be installed by the mere diy enthusiast, hence where my involvement with this Yale system comes into place.

A few days ago my friends were unfortunate enough to have a break in. A window was smashed and a computer and a large amount of jewellery was taken. They were both left shocked and shaken by the incident and didn’t feel safe in their own home. The kind soul that I am offered to improve the security of their apartment and asked if they had considered an alarm system. After trawling argos, homebase, b&q etc we settled on the Yale system as it appeared to fit the requirement to adequately secure their apartment from every angle. £74.99 later the system had been purchased.

Whats in the box?
The system contains the following parts.
1 x Siren
1x Dummy Siren
1 x Control Panel
3 x PIR Detectors
2 x Door/Window Contacts
All batteries
All fixtures and screws
Instruction manual and DVD

The system is a wireless system which means that there is no cabling required. All parts of the system are battery, which need replacing every twelve months. This makes for a no hassle installation or having to hide unsightly cables everywhere and it really is as simple as placing all the items in their relevant place and then you are good to go.

What do all the different items do?
Siren – This is the nerve centre for the whole system and when it receives a signal from any of the devices it will trigger the alarm at a massive 110db whilst flashing the strobe rapidly to attract attention. The dummy siren looks identical but is non-operational, acting more as a visual deterrent.

Control Panel – This is wireless and is how the system is set or unset. Operation is simple with a code entered to set and unset the system. There is also a panic button, which will activate the siren in an emergency. The good feature of the control panel is that it can be removed from its holster and taken with you around the property or to bed. Allowing you to summon help any time of the night or day.

PIR Detector – These detectors pick up movement within a set radius. They are ideally sited opposite doors or windows that are not protected by the door or window contact and will detect anybody moving around within the area. If the system is armed and they detect an intruder they send a signal to sound the alarm.

Door/Window Contact – These protect the main doors and vulnerable windows of the property. If these are forced then the system will sound the alarm.

Installation
Now before you all think that it is going to take hours to fit a system like this or that you need a large amount of technical knowledge you will be surprised to hear that you don’t.

The system took me two hours to install and all I needed was a screwdriver, a normal drill and a stepladder.

Once you have taken all the items out of the box you have to ‘train’ them into the system. You simply press the ‘learn’ button inside the sounder and then on each of the items and the siren will chirp as each contact/pir/control panel is trained into the system. You are then good to go and place all the items.

The siren requires drilling onto the exterior wall and mounting with four screws, the same for the dummy.

The PIR’s need four holes drilling and then screwing onto the wall.

The door contacts can either be drilled and screwed to the door or window or simply attached with the adhesive pads, which come with the kit. (Preferred choice).

Once all the items are in place you are ready to use the system!

Programming the system
The only programmable element of this system is the code. The instructions are clear on how to change the code and this can be changed to any four digit number. Once changed the system is up and running!

----------
The system has provided my friends with a sense of security that they never had before. It has also provided them with a visual deterrent from further burglary and all for £75 from Argos. They now feel safer in their home and are comfortable that they will help prevent a robbery reoccurring in the future.

The beauty of this system is down to its wireless nature it is easily removed and taken to a new property should they move in the future. As it is wireless additional sensors/detectors can be purchased to make the system cover more areas should they move to a bigger property in the future. Any new detectors are simply ‘learned’ into the system once again.

-------------
Personally I would primarily choose a hardwired alarm system installed by a professional company, however these systems cost hundreds and thousands of pounds.

If the difference was between alarm or no alarm, then for £75 I would fit a Yale System to my property today. It really is worth it for the piece of mind if you want a simple and cheap solution to home security.

Keep safe everyone!
