I bought my DVX6600 about two years ago (cost £70 at the time, but the newer model is much cheaper) to replace a poorly Philips DVD player. The ability to play video other than DVD seemed like a good idea, much more convenient than using a PC.
The unit is a full-width, slimline design. The disc tray looks (and probably is) fragile, but it hasn't broken yet. When the player is switched on, it spends quite some time checking the drive for a disc (this is a bit tedious).
The player handles DIVX & XVID files well; some (poorly encoded?) files play with a visual judder, but most are OK. I have encountered a couple of video files that couldn't be played with this unit (I suspect dodgy encoding to be the fault, the files were either DIVX or XVID). VCD & SVCDs play flawlessly.
The unit is Dolby 5.1 compatible, but I only have mine connected to a fairly cheap stereo Hi-Fi.
It is possible to upgrade the firmware, but I haven't bothered to see if any upgrades are available.
A nice player, I'm sure the newer model is even better.
How helpful would this review be to a person making a buying decision? Rating guidelines
Although these are dated nowadays they are still a great thing to own with the increase in bandwidth available to all...and so the increase in downloading of tv/movie content.
The review wasn't so helpful as there is no list of the formats the machine is capable of. To say there were some files the machine couldn't play but then to not even know what those files were...?
No point in mentioning it in that case!!
also to mention the firmware as a sort of aside and no further information on what that actually means is not helpful to most people. I know what firmware is and what it would mean to update it but so many people haven't a clue that the review would be better if you had included something about this.
