Advantages: It worked for a while; Recognised name on the cover Disadvantages: Everything - slow, unreliable, doesn't work!
I have a 4416e. It is slow, and has always been problematical. I have had it for under 2 years and have only written about 50 CDs on it and now it no longer works. Despite numerous attempts at getting in touch with Yamaha, I have not received a response.

It often goes through the full write process and puts no information on the disc at all – just enough to ruin the disc. I have tried different makes and qualities of discs, but it doesn’t seem to make any difference.

I have downloaded new drivers and upgrades to the software and have even tried a different type of re-writing software, in case it was that that was the problem. No luck.
This wasn’t cheap – over £200 – and now I’m faced with the expense of replacing it. It certainly won’t be with a Yamaha. I would not recommend this product to anyone.
I have decided to go for an Aopen. Dabs.com have the 32r 10rw Int IDE for £135 (inc VAT), which seems reasonable. Their CD-Rom drives are always winning awards for quality and reliability in PC magazine reviews – often coming out with the Gold award. I will do a review of it when I’ve checked it out.
Advantages: nothing comes to mind Disadvantages: no raw writing, questionable reliability record
...rated at 2x and the Yamaha drive knows this. Its an ok product but no Plextor. Don't let anyone tell you that the Yamaha's are as good as Plextors as their not and I'm actually a Yamaha owner not a Plextor owner so I ain't going to be biased. Plextors are generally better specified and better made. You might find a Yamaha that is faster but you'd still probably be better off with the Plextor. ...

This drive is the answer to your data storage, back-up and transfer needs. No other storage medium is so cost-effective. No other medium can be read by 300 million computers worldwide. And no other medium lets you record music and play it back on your stereo or in your car. Yamaha sets the standard for CD-ReWritable (CD-RW) drives. Yamaha quality, reliability, speed, features, bundled software and reputation are just a few of the reasons why. This drive comes with value kit. This value kit contains most of what you need to start using your CD-ReWritable straight away.
