Yamaha CRW 6416S

Advantages: Quick, easy to use, well built and reliable
Disadvantages: A little more expensive than lesser named brands.

...I can’t speak highly enough about Yamaha products as a whole, and their range of Re-Writers is no exception. I bought a one of the 6416s series and it has been excellent. I chose the SCSI version and not the IDE because of problems I had heard about concerning the way IDE works in this area. Having looked around extensively, I found a great deal at Insight. I bought the Re-writer and an Adaptec PCI SCSI card to connect it to my motherboard. SCSI is much quicker than IDE and when ‘burning’ a CD that is important. You should get all the software you need included. Everything installed itself in Windows 98 and I was up and running within a ten minutes. It writes data and audio and around 1 megabyte per second without any problems. Yamaha units usually have at least 2 megabytes of buffer memory build in, so very few CD making sessions go... Advantages: Buffer under run protected, burn images onto disk
Disadvantages: special disks req for images to show up right

...Easy to install, "Plug n play". Image software comes with writer and is easy to use (T@2), the only problem is that on non T@2 disks the image is difficult to see. I have found that disks with a darker recording ink or coloured disks show the images better. Writes at whatever speed the data can be supplied to it. For audio cd's it uses a recording method which spreads out the data more, meaning less skips on your cd walkman but this also reduces the available recording time by about 3 min. 44x write, 24x rewrite, 44x read. Comes with 1 T@2 cd, 1 CDRW and Nero sofware. Good writer, high price tag. £99 or more depending where you buy it from, so shop around!! Mine is from Pc world sale price £99 usual price £129. ...Yamaha was recommended to me as the best brand in CDwriters. So I ended up buying a 4260. This is a six speed read, four speed write and two speed rewrite drive. Pleasently styled. It was simple enough to configure but sadly the drive was not solid in operation. There seemed to be numerous problems at first configuring software for the drive. Even when it was successful it wasn't as the CDs it made weren't exactly good readers on other CDROM drives. I could witter on for ages saying all the hassle I had with the drive but I won't suffice to say I was very disappointed in this product and wouldn't touch a Yamaha CDwriter again unless it was dirt cheap. Even though I'd only had the drive a little over a year I decided to replace it with a HP model. This drive was everything the Yamaha wasn't, hassle free, stable and made excellent CDs. I...
