This was my first guitar, and still one of my favourite - I recommend this to anyone starting guitar. The Yamaha Pacifica sounds much better than any other guitar in its price range, and is much more versatile. It is a combination of the telecaster and stratocaster style sounds.
The guitar is also very strong, its a heavy, well built guitar. I have never had any problems with my pacifica, and now mine is more than 10 years old, the only problem I have with it is the pick guard has turned a slight yellowy colour. Maybe you can get products to fix that.
This guitar is great value for money, therefore good for beginners, but it wouldn't sound out of place being used by an experienced guitarist either.
